Forgive me everyone as I dont own a PST but am very interested in one in the next cpl months.....what is the actual issue here? If I recieve one how do I know if its the "sick" one or not? Is there a way to ensure I donr recieve a bad one initially?
Thanks

Serial number 94765, and I think it looks rusty. Images are okay though it but not 'snappy'
Just bought used, a week ago. Currently evaluating options regarding replacement of the objective from someone else's modded PST, or paying for a repair.

Hi RedLion...I just bought a (second hand) PST, SN#103452, it is blue, beautiful...and clear. Since we are 3 digits apart, can you help me with the aprox. age of mine by telling me when you bought yours? The seller couldn't remember when he bought it, and he thinks his wife threw out the packaging...including the insert. Calling Meade yielded "we don't keep those kind of records" Bad attitude...gerrrr!
Thanks in advance for letting me know.
Russ
ps. First light, or should I say second light was terrific. Scope came with a TeleVue Click.Stop.Zoom 8-24mm eyepiece

Well mine has the reflective blue lens serial number 98449, bought about 6yrs ago new, I noticed earlier on this year that the rust problem has started on the lens perimeter, as its out of warrenty and with repair/shipping costs from Canada its not worth getting fixed so its sold and the money will be put towards a replacement, I notice that the newer version is now made in Mexico as against the USA made original, mine was a USA version, however the cost of a PST hasn,t come down any seeing as its production had shifted to a cheap labour country. The replacement ? certainly leaning away from another PST to Lunt, this rust problem is a bit of a fiasco , some people have had to return their PST several times because of this problem and it still seems to be rearing its ugly head, Dave.

I replaced #98449 ( sold with full disclosure about rust issue) with a new Mexico made PST #108157,the views through this are better than the original ever was and the objective is the later clear blue rust free type, however I was sorry to see the original brass tube has been replaced with anodised aluminum, took a look at the lunt scopes but they were more money,Dave.

Mine is only 17 units after yours. # 108174 which I received July 11. I got the double stack and everything seems to be OK. The focuser is a little "rough" as opposed to a loaner I had (but was repaired due to the rust coloured objective). The loaner was manufactured in the U.S. and has a smoother focuser. My PST was made in Mexico.

I just brought home 107958. Blue and clear, healthy.
Funny story of how this came to me. Prior owner (member of my club) had an older PST that succumbed to rust. He sent it back to Meade. They repaired it, shipped it back, and UPS lost it in Utah. It took months of waiting while Meade resolved the situation. Meanwhile he got impatient and ordered a Lunt 60. Once Meade and UPS resolved that it was well and truly lost, Meade sent him a brand new PST which was now utterly superfluous, so he sold it to me. Happy day!

No I can't , but does the objective have a metallic coat , Or is it clear , see through. It was the early models with the metallic coatings that were prone to oxidation.

I just picked up a used PST 94930. It seems to work properly, but the lens is a bit on the orange side. Does Meade still repair these? Has anyone had it done out of warranty and how much would that cost? Thanks.

I called Meade. They still repair these, but the starting price is $150 + shipping. I think I'll hold off on that for a while.

I just received a second hand PST that was said to be rust free but upon inspection I have the same problem you do. SN 95292. I dont have anything to compare it too so I dont know how much I am missing. For $150 repair I could have just bought a new one. Buyer beware I guess.

I wasn't expecting to get a lot of use out of it, so I wouldn't have paid for a new one. It still actually works- I'm curious as to how much the rust affects the performance. I have a friend with an unrusted version I'm hoping to do a side-by-side comparison soon.
