Nikon 6x15 Mikron new
      #53775 - 02/12/04 08:16 AM

Anyone tried out the above little porro-prism binoculars form Nikon? If so, what did you think of them? They are expensive, but less so than 8x20 from Leica/Swaro, and they look VERY compact. The low power makes them more suitable for insects than an 8x pair too.

Mickey,

I believe this one has street price of ~$77. My experience is that you'll get much more viewing satisfaction with a pair of good quality light weight compact 8X25s than a monocular. For me 25mm objective is the lower limit, 15mm is really tiny. Image will be dim unless it's in broad daynight or well lit indoor location.

I purchased two good quality monoculars within the past few month. One is a Celestron 8X25 with 8.7 deg FOV. The other a well made Japanese 7X25 with 10 DEG(!) FOV, and sharp close focus to 3 feet. I'll post a review on a different thread later. For now let me just say I prefer bino vision thru my daughter's Pentax DCF MP 8X28 with 48 deg APFOV than the 70 deg APFOV of the 7X monocular.

You can get a pair EO Energy 8X21 with 7.3 deg FOV, wt of 6 oz and close of 8 ft if you are sold on really compact optics. Price is $39.99.

Hi Erik

They are about $200 i.e. expensive - according to various sources on the net. Yes the objectives are tiny, but they should have enough brightness on a typical day in the open. The appeal is the small size. That's why people pay silly money for e.g. Swarovski 8x20. If I'm visiting friends, I feel a bit stupid carrying an 8x30 or even an 8x24 inverted porro due to bulk. (They are bulky if the aim is to keep them hidden on 'stand-by' in a pocket.) The 6x is appealing as 8x bins are too powerful for dragonflies that are hunting for prey.

Plus of course, these fit into the optical jewellery category c.f. Swaro 8x20 i.e. a nice toy!

Anyway, I am still curious how the optics actually perform i.e. sharpness, colour, contrast and so on.

Hi Mickey,

I thought this model name rang a bell and it is because it features in a list of Nikon binoculars in a history article I once read.

It was first produced in 1948 , so the 2003 version is a retro.

The following link address is probably bigger than the bino itself ! -- which is a most pecululiar -looking contraption

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.fernglasshop-berlin.de/article_g016_361.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3DNikon%2B6%2Bx%2B15%2BMikron%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DG

When you get to the page - keep clicking "next article" then "O.K" in the appearing box until after about 6 items you come to the model in question.

One thing I would careful with is the 10mm eye -relief !

I think Erik must have misunderstood your question and thought you were referring to a monocular.

This Mikron is as you say , quite expensive .

Last year I tried a Nikon 5 x 15 Titanium model and was pleasantly surprised by it for it's size , and a re-check tells me the 5 x 15 has longer eye-relief .

A useful quick -guide for technical specs. of older Nikon binoculars can be viewed at :

Good luck -- Kenny.
