Vixen porta II mount question! new
      #5432108 - 09/21/12 03:34 AM

Hi guys! I just wonder if this Vixen porta II mount can handle my set ups weight at around 7.5kg? My set up is an APM triplet APO 100mm f/8 light weight tube, 2" william optics diagonal + eyepeice and sometimes i will also use a bino with the setup.

I will get a little stronger tripod to make the set up more solid, do u guys think i need to make some changes to the mounthead it self or is it strong enough to handle my gear in a good way? /Thanks Anders

Closest experience would be an older celestron/vixen C102 (f/9.8), worked quite well on the Porta I; no stick-tion, smooth motions and slo-mo controls - only thing needed was a beefier tripod for sure.

Andrs,

I mount my SV15T20 on my Porta II, but I use my CG-5 tripod to add stability. It works very well, but I think it puts the mount very close to the limit of practical use.

The Porta II specs at 20lbs ( about 9 Kg ) but most reports seem to indicate that it's really only good to a bit more than 1/2 of that. Your scope at 7.5 Kg ( about 16 lbs ) will be pushing the mount and you'll for sure need to upgrade the tripod to have any kind of stability.

If you already have the Porta, I'd say go for it. If not, I'd suggest buying a mount that can handle the scope better.

I agree with what has already been said. My AT102 is max for my PortaII and could benefit from a better tripod.

Which Starguy tripod is best...the HAL130 metal or wood option?....thanks!

I don't have experience with either one of the Hal tripods, but wood is much better at dampening vibration than aluminum. The Vixen Berlebach tripod looks like it is worth the extra bucks.

Thx all for your inputs and thoughts about the qestion i had. What I will do is that I will buy the Porta mount and use it on my 80mm ED refractor and look a little more what the market has to offer for my 100mm APO refractor setup. / Anders

It handles my 90mm very well with the stock aluminum tripod. With the RACI, clamps and RDF and heaviest EP it's likely around 6-7kg total. Anything heavier than that would likely need a retrofit with wooden legs or steel tripod like RTLR's.
