True to its otaku nature, the latest issue of Wired has a brief article on Naveen Jain ("Obsessed Meteorologist"), a dotcom gazillionaire who collects only the most pristine meteorites collected shortly after imipact, called "witnessed falls".

Some these are apparently Really Expensive, such as the Chunk O' Mars that attacked Chassigny, France in 1815 ($100K/ gram).

I suspect at heart it's really an exclusivist/elitist thing, like high fashion/art. As Jain says, "How many people can say they've touched Mars?"

Wouldn't it be neat to live in an age where we went to all the planets. I would have a collection of rocks in a line from all the planets and moons

Did 'Wired' actually refer to him as a "meteorologist"?
I would have expected better from them.

A "meteorologist" is an individual with specialized education who uses scientific principles to explain, understand, observe or forecast the earth's atmospheric phenomena and/or how the atmosphere affects the earth and life on the planet. A weatherman, basically.

Meteoritics is a science that deals with meteorites and other extraterrestrial materials that further our understanding of the origin and history of the solar system. A specialist who studies meteoritics is known as a "meteoriticist".

Far from it folks!
There's a substantial meteorite hunting/collecting community out there.
I stumbled across it a couple years after delving into astronomy.
Being interested in geology earlier in life, it seemed like a logical extension.
Visit the "space rocks" forum sometime.

Indeed; here we are!

Collecting meteorites can be done very inexpensively, and yes, one "can touch Mars"! I have a micro speciman from Mars, that again was very reasonably priced!

There's a lot of information in the Space Rocks Forum; please enjoy!

Hi,
The most recent meteorite presentation I gave was to The American Meteorological Society! They have a great project called Station Scientist. The idea behind it is that the meteorologist is often the only person at a TV station with a science background so they would be the ones to report on a local science story, such as a fireball. They were a great audience and very knowledgeable.

Some of you might remember that Naveen is the collector who bought a meteorite specimen from dealers in Germany for a quarter of a million dollars - he did not like the specimen - but then the dealers refused to refund the money.
