Celestron OptiView with light pollution filters new
      #52446 - 02/09/04 02:03 PM

Hi,

I wanted to know if anyone has purchased a pair of these binoculars (Celestron - 10x50mm OptiView with light pollution filters), or could comment on how well they work, or could recommend a better pair...

These would not be my primary binoculars(already own Oberwerk 12x60 and Orion Ultraview 7x50).

Thanks in advance

Fred

I was hoping someone would respond to this topic. Are the filters a good idea or a gimmick? I am trying to pay attention and learn before buying.

I can get these for about $90 or something like Oberwerks for $100. Is Bak 4 prism so much better than Bak 7 with filters that I should forget the optiviews?

Hi Fred,

I've seen an advertisement for Apogee 25x100 & 20x100 that come with light pollution filters built in to the eyepieces. With a simple click you can remove them at will.

I have a light pollution filter for my 1.25" ep. I might try to find a way to mount it to the ep of the binos and see if the views are better.

Don't buy binoculars with "Built in" filters.

If you want a nebula filter get a good one and use it over the dominant eyepiece.

If you have light polution, choose a binocular with a little bit smaller exit pupil, maybe on the order of 4mm.

For an explanation of Bak7 vs Bak4, go to the "Best Of" post at the top of the binocular forum. Click on Bak7/BaK4 thread and you will see a link back to a very good discussion on the topic.
