This part came with my CG-5 mount today and I have no idea what it is. Anybody have any idea?

Nothing much, it's the cheesy little dovetail plate Celestron sends with all their mounts. Not good quality, would hold a small lightweight scope. I only keep mine in case I were to ever decide to put a 1/4"x20 screw in the center hole and use for DSLR photography.

Yep, its a dove tail plate all rightie. You're supposed to bolt a set of rings to the plate, put an OTA in the rings, and then put the whole she-bang on the mount.
Because it fits into the "saddle", some call it a saddle plate.
If you want a better plate, try here: Scope Stuff

Thanks! I thought it might be a dovetail plate. Definitely don't need it -- my scopes already have dovetail plates and rings.

I think they sell for a fortune. I hear folks looking for them frequently. Toss it on astromart if your not gonna use it. Joe

If you still have it mine didn't come with that and I sure could use it for my old 60mm so I could put it on my mount. So if you have and would like to part with it let me know and maybe we can make a deal.

There's plenty of metal there to handle a 10 pound scope... It's short so it is plenty stiff.
