Takahashi EM-11 temma 2 goto still a good mount? new
      #5382700 - 08/23/12 12:30 PM

Hi Guys,

I want to upgrade my airline setup from a tripod + geared head with Takahashi FS-60 scope to something with goto and control from iPad / pc. I am also thinking perhaps a Sky90 scope too. I like the look of the EM-11 and it certainly looks to be light enough. Cost is not the primary driver here - I want something that's high quality and will last.

Cheers
Chris

I liked my old EM-10/Temma Jr a lot but slews were very slow. The current version with Temma 2 should improve on that significantly. If a full-featured, dedicated goto handbox isn't important to you then I can't think of any other mount in that weight/price class that would serve you as well.

I think all the 11s have Temma 2Jr?? Mine is a 2007 model and its a Jr. On 12volts is pretty slow, but usable, 24v is better.
Its a very high quality mount-typical Tak. The prices for a new one seem crazy though. I got lucky and scored an unused one on Amart.
I don't know what you could get with similar capacities that would be nicer? A Mach 1 is much more mount, both $$ and loading

They all have the new IIM controller now. It slews faster like the Temma2 and I have the impression that uses a standard autoguide port connector, unlike the Temma Jr and Temma2 (I haven't seen the M version yet).

The only other mount I'd consider in that weight class would be a GPDX/SS2K, if you can find one. Not quite Tak quality but getting there - and it has a dedicated goto handbox. Cheaper, too.

The only problem I can see with the mount is the fact that its elevation adjustment works only within 20 to 50 degrees... This may not be an issue for you, but it certainly is for me!

P.

Chris, my former EM-200 was also 20 to 50 degrees model. I'm located at around 52 degrees. Takahashi Unterlinden in France advised me to put a piece of wood under the tripod leg that pointed to the north. That worked for me.

There is a wedge available for EM-200, not sure if they work for EM-11.

By the way, I checked your website and saw your observatory, it looks very nice, congrats! It's an dream observatory!

Chris, if you want a Takahashi leveler (2 to 5 degrees), here is one:

How is that better than my block of wood?

Joe

Thanks for the advice and kind words about the observatory. It does seem silly though to have to resort to a block of wood having spent $$$$$ on the mount so you can use it in Europe. I am sure I read that the UK was second after the US in astronomy sales!

Cheers
Chris

Chris, there is also Takahashi PM-1, it has an elevation of 0-55 degrees. It's lighter than EM-11 and has less load capacity. But it should suffice with the FC-60 or the new Tak FC-76D. It would make an ultimate portable solar eclipse combination.

Here is a link of the mount on the Takahashi Japan wesite:

Hi Guys,

Just to say thanks again for the advice ... after a fair bit of thought I just ordered a new EM-11 2M. I will be using with Sky-fi and my iPad.

Chris
