I have built a couple DOBs from wood and have acceptable results. I would like to try my hand at an equatorial mount but I know very little about them. Can you point me at a book about DIY equatorials? Similar to "The Dobsonian Telescope" by Kriege & Berry.

The so-called 'horseshoe' mount is one of the best types for accuracy.

It seems to me the English yoke would be easier to build than the horseshoe, and also make it a lot easier to get to the eyepiece. Sure, you give up maybe 10 degrees near the pole, but that's not a huge tradeoff for more convenient eye placement.

I'm thinking of building one for my 8-inch--I'd keep the rotating-tube-in-a-box feature from the original starsplitter dob, and build the mount around that.

There is an out of print book by Richard Berry titled "Build Your Own Telescope", which has a chapter with a lot of pictures and drawings for building an equatorial mount out of wood and teflon. Another thing you may want to look into is the novel method for building pipe mounts invented by Dave Groski and illustrated in the current S&T. This can be scaled up somewhat (see current thread in ATM forum). As far as I know there is no comprehensive book about building larger mounts. Wish there was.
