Crater Hecataeaus at the Eastern Lunar Limb new
      #5457097 - 10/05/12 08:42 PM Attachment (42 downloads)

Near the eastern lunar limb during good librations, crater Hecataeaus (130 km) just beyond larger crater Humboldt (not in the sketch to the north) was the subject of this sketch. The few lunar features to the east from the earth were now in shadow as the Moon phase was beyond full and entering waning gibbous phase. The distant inner wall of the crater was showing terracing and craterlets while the floor was mostly hidden in shadow. To the west heavily lava flooded crater Balmer (116 km) with nearly half its walls run down and destroyed was bathing in full sunlight.
Sketching:

For this sketch I used: black Canson paper 9"x 12", white and black Conte’ pastel pencils and blending stumps. Sketch was scanned
Telescope: 10 inch f/ 5.7 Dobsonian and 6 mm eyepiece 242x

Again a fine sketch! I've never heard of the two craters before... so I learned something new today.

Rony, Jean and Erika,

Thank you all for the nice words.
One could sketch the Moon for a lifetime and not capture all there is to see.

Exquisite Frank - those subtle halftones and finer blendings really make this piece high caliber work. Seriously good.

Pete
