Greetings all,
Attached are two drawings I made on the 13-14th October, 2012. We had some superb seeing- the best in Leicester for many months with Jupiter steady for many moments at a time. Initially when I started at 2310UT conditions weren't promising, but as the planet climbed higher things vastly improved. The transparency was also excellent (this is unusual, normally transparent nights are not to good for planeatry work). Main points were as follows:
Drawing 1: -SSTB seems to be present but does not extend from limb to limb. -STB seen, darker in some sections more than others -STropZ bright, STropB seems to be present, more conspicuous in some parts than others. -Oval BA seen, at x312 it can be seen that the oval is touching the STB and STropB. -GRS present, not as much colour as last apparition. There seems to be a darker core present. -SEB rather active; proc the GRS, the dark orange SEBz and the grey SEB(s) appear to do dip down ander the GRS, RSH rather bright. Fol. the GRS the region is rather churned up in appearance, two bright irregular regions prominents immediately fol the GRS. -EZ contains a number of festoons and an EB -NEB, contains some darker regions and sections -NTropZ dark, but perhaps not as dark as earlier in the year -NTB broad, both the noth and south boundaries contain thin (pencil line) dark sections -NTZ light, yellowish -NPR dark grey, more so than the SPR.
Drawing 2: GRS region has now passed. -STB seems to be slightly irregular; perhaps the fol. part at a slightly higher latitude? -StropB seems to fade on the proc. side just before the CM -SEB more uniform here, the SEBz dark but not uniform, definite darker and lighter structures present. -EZ just as active with festoons and EB. -NEB now seems to be of similar width as SEB? A number of darker brown structres present. -NTropZ dark, but again, not as much as earlier in the year. -NTB contains darker components.
Filter Work: 0324UT W#80A, x250: Interesting view, both SEB and NEB stand out well, as do the structres within them. NTB also well defined in this filter.
0329UT W#25A x250: The main belts are rather more obscure in this light, but the festoons in the EZ stand out well, it is also apparent that there are lighter and darker regions within the EZ.
0334UT W#47 x250: Rather interesting view, two main equatorial belts can be made out, as can the lighter regions in the EZ.
0341 W#11 x250: Great filter for Jupiter, all the belts and details within them nicely emphasized, but so too are the features of the EZ. This filter good for transit work.
Closed down at 0425UT.
Best wishes, -Paul.

More good drawings this early in the apparition. I particularly like the darker core in the red spot - not an easy sight - atleast in CT.

Great sketches as usual. Paul, do you ever try strip sketches over long sessions like this one?

Thanks everyone, glad you like them.
@idp- yes in general if I am going to make more than two Jupiter drawings I condense them into a strip map. I also make strip maps of small regions of there is much of interest in a particular belt or zone.
Best wishes, -Paul

Paul,
Beautiful and highly detailed drawings. That yellowish hue to the North Tropical Zone has been conspicuous every time I look at Jupiter (and I'm one of those people who don't see color very well).
BTW, I've found that the W#11 filter has given me the best of the filtered views this apparition.
Congratulations on your seeing.
