FWIW there's now a port of Stellarium available on the Apple app store. I like it a lot on my iPod touch.

The app Living Earth HD makes a great companion for Moon Globe. You get a detailed Earth view with the current cloud patterns from weather sats, updates q3 hours. You can pause, spin, zoom. Save favorite cities for temp and weather.
I wish you could animate the clouds a few frames. Nevertheless, brilliant!

Star Walk is a good app. I believe it cost 1.99 in the app store. Point your phone anywhere in the sky and it shows you what star you're looking at. Plus it has the rise/set times for all the planets. Also you can select any dso,and it will guide you with arrows to the where the dso resides. And it has live satellite tracking. So, as far as I'm concerned its worth the money.

I almost choked when a buddy whipped out his iPhone and showed me the planetarium app, I don't remember what it was called.
He waved the cell phone around the sky and it kept the stars aligned in it to a tee.
Handy little gadget when you're trying to figure out what "that" is over there!
Good article, Thank you.

Tom,
Great little article. Quite the teaser, though. You've got me waiting on the edge of my seat for Part 2. I was unaware of Moon Globe. No more. Wow! Keep up the good iWork, friend.

I was a Stellarium user from way back when, and I found the app in the App Store last yeas after buying my iPod touch. It is a great app, but does not appear to be available in the App Store for US customers. Hopefully, that changes in the future. It's excellent for an observing aid.
