Fresh start with LX 90 guiding new
      #5474549 - 10/17/12 07:05 AM

Total abject failure to get the lx90 to guide using a qhy5, PHD or Guidedog and a serial/usb connection. So....start from scratch.

I'm sure someone out there must be guiding an lx90 without having the mythical APM, which I have seen pictures of but am skeptical as to it's existence....:-)

If anyone is actually guiding an LX90 I would be eternally grateful if they would share the secret of how to do it with me. Please, anyone? Just don't tell me I need the APM! I'm willing to buy whatever is necessary :-)

Whilst I am on, the 2 spare aux ports on the mount of the LX90 - what are they for? I can control the scope through the handset spare port using any software, but the aux ports on the mount seem to be superflous.

The original APM909 was discontinued, but there are full and partial clones still available that do work. They are normally only used if your guide camera has ST4 outputs.

If you want to use any form of direct ST4 guiding, you will need an APM or clone, and there is no way round that. If you dont use ST4 guiding, then the APM is not required, unless you want focus or reticle controls.

Ready for it???? The APM

There are several utility lumps that can plug into the Aux system and can be used as required.
The currently supported items are
a) APM909 guide/focus/reticle
b) 1244 focusser
c) LNT modules ( if you want auto aligning of an AltAz mount )
d) Factory test units
e) The internal GPS modules ( LX90s )
f) The internal timechips ( DS,DSX etc )
g) StarGPS modules grab their power from the ports

Thanks Andrew :-)

As a matter of interest - any idea why they stopped making the APM909? Seems a strange decision to downgrade a products capabilities.

If it was because you can get a USB converter, then they certainly made life more difficult! It just seems bizzare that a piece of kit like the LX90 can only be used to image the moon or the bright planets. I could have paid an awful lot less for something to do that with! It's a bit over-engineered for just doing that.

Gday ???

The only reason i ever heard was the unit didnt comply with new ROHS regulations, but i suspect thats a furphy.
We know the unit has some bugs when used with the latest firmwares, but thats easily patched out.
That said, re guiding, most people just use serial commands direct to the Hbx to guide quite happily. Hundreds, ( if not thousands ) of people will be guiding LX90s via serial commands.
The APM909 is only required if the guide camera only talks ST4,

Andrew
