Nice work. These proms are big enough to make you able to see them in your PST. Tell me Mel, have you tried a 7mm eyepiece in your PST ? According to some calculations I did, the PST can handle 56X as you are using 40X actually. If you can confirm that, I would be interested to know. Maybe I'm wrong. Andre. I have 9 and 7mm TMB Planetarys I will try. Thanks for the idea. Please let me know how the light is with more magnification. Try to see the biggest you can go without loosing too much light. To have the best idea, please use a dark cloth on your head to make you eyes very dark adapted. I really want to know what is the maximum power the PST can go. Andre. The Sun seems to be waking up a little again. The new active region that just rotated into view (AR1596) bears watching. I think the presentation convention for the Sun is north up and west to the right. That's what I try to do so it's easier to compare sketches and images. @ Andre--the maximum useful magnification of the PST is dictated by seeing conditions more than anything else and seeing is often poor in the daytime unless you are observing early or late. Poor transparency also limits how high you can go with magnification. Disk details but especially proms really suffer when using a PST under poor transparency conditions in my experience. I have been able to use my 8mm BO/TMB Planetary ep (50x) once in a while but usually 40mm is as high as I can go and often 33x gives the sharpest view. A lot of folks like to use a zoom eyepiece so they can just dial in the magnification that conditions allow. I believe they usually go from 7-24mm so you have a wide range of choices. I have an old zoom ep and it won't come to focus in my PST for some reason I always start a session with my 15mm ep (27x) to get a good overview of what is visible around the solar disk and sometimes never get past that. Ha sketch @27x A dark cloth over your head can really help improve the contrast through the ep. I have one that my daughter-in-law made me that is black on one side and white on the other (it can get hot under there) with weights sewn into the corners to keep the breeze from blowing it. It's deluxe! I will get a dark head cover and expect it will improve the view. The white light sketch orientation is currently a simplification of workflow for me but since I present both views it makes sense to have them with comparable directions. And it's no excuse in this context but the Mt. Wilson daily sunspot drawings use pre-Apollo west/left convention. Good on them for doing it in any direction eh? I agree--Those folks at Mt. Wilson have been producing a solar observation every clear day since WWI--they can do it any way they want.
