Orion AZ-4 with Micro-Motion for Astrotrac
      #5478799 - 10/19/12 01:03 PM

Hello all,

I am wondering whether anyone has tried the Orion AZ-4 mount? I saw that there is a review thread for this mount, but it just seems like at the end of the thread, people who participated in bought a higher price mount instead.

I would like to know whether the head of this mount can be detached or not. My idea is to use it to mount a small refractor on top of the astrotrac system, and also be able to use it as a grab-n-go mount for visual observing. Many people recommend adding another Manfrotto Junior Gear head, but the head alone cost $225 already.

Any suggestions?

Thank you very much

Cheers,
Bhoom

I guess I got my answer about this mount from the review on Orion website: http://www.telescope.com/Mounts-Tripods/Altazimuth-Mounts-Tripods/Orion-AZ-4-Micro-Motion-Altazimuth-Mount/pc/-1/c/2/sc/35/p/101904.uts

Yeah...I'd say so. Shame.

I'm not sure what else you expected from a mount and tripod combo for 150 bucks ...

Decent built quality, like that of the non-slo-mo AZ-4 (Versago II) which is only a bit more expensive in Orion garb (and the same as this new mount when wearing the Sky Watcher brand) would not be too much to ask.

Thank you Uncle Rod and Kevin for your opinion. I just remembered that Vixen also offers a piggyback mount with slow motion control for $135. May be I would better go with this instead. Do you also have any opinion about this one?

I had the Vixen piggyback mount, and I would not recommend it. For use with a small camera it would be fine, but even when used with my ultra light Kowa spotting scope it caused a great deal of extra vibration.

Thank you so much Joe for sharing your experience. I guess there is really no simple and cheap solution to astrophotography.
