Hey we are 2 weeks away from ESP'12 and nothing on the forum yet? This star party must be one of the best kept secrets in amateur astronomy. Who all is planning on going and what hardware will you be sport'n. For me, I will have my Z10 and CPC800. Looking forward to the dry dark skies of West Texas!

It must indeed be a well kept secret. I will have to give it consideration for next year. What are the typical day and night temperatures there this time of year? One thing I've learned about Okie-Tex over the years is that you always take cold weather gear, regardless of whether it is held in early September or early October.

I will be there from Wednesday night on.
Rex, the temperatures vary quite a bit, but it is generally from 70-85 during the day with the temperature dropping during to night to the 40's (typically a 30-40 degree swing in temperature). Having said that, it can also get a bit warmer and can definitely get much cooler than those ranges on occasion. There is no question that you should bring a good jacket to this event, as well as warm clothing layers for the nights.
Usually, the days are pretty pleasant, but you may want something on if the winds kick up and it is cool.

I will be there from Monday through Sunday. I still haven't recovered from Okie-Tex, but I would rather be ailing surrounded by friends than just at home!

I will be heading up with two other friends staying Thursday through Saturday. One friend may bring a 10 inch dob and 4 inch binoculars. The other friend and I will have an assortment of smaller scopes (Meade 2045, AT72ED) and lenses for imaging with CCD cameras.

The weather gods may not appear to be smiling on us yet. This darn front is stalled and creating havoc with the weather forecasts for next week. I really need more than two clear nights to justify the gasoline costs....

It's a great event; Stan and the group at the X-Bar Ranch are terrific hosts, and the volunteers who do all the logistics do a great job, too. Unfortunately, the weather looks pretty iffy for Wed-Sat nights at this point, so in spite of looking forward to this for the last 3 months, I may end up not going unless I see a more optimistic forecast (which I'll be monitoring up to the last minute). ------------- Chris

I'm going rain or shine. If the night time skies are cloudy (i.e. I get a good nights sleep) I'll run up and see the JSC guys at Ft McKavett or hit the Sonora Caverns. Do some sightseeing. I've also got some books I've been looking for the time to read. It's all time away from work, to recharge, and talk to other people with a similar interest.
See you there!

Monday night was good clear night. There were some low clouds in the South West but they didn't seem to want to intrude on the party. I observed until 1 AM, logging over 40 objects on my H400 list. Tonight looks to be another good night and there is a glimmer of hope now for Wednesday night too!

I'm so glad ya'll had a good night. I hope you get some more. I had plans to attend, but the forecast looks pretty dismal. To those who have not attended, this is really a very nice place with dark skies and really friendly hosts. I highly recommend it.

So how did the second half of the week go, as far as weather and observing? I saw there was a huge thunderstorm close to Eldorado on Saturday.

I ended up leaving on Friday as I had to make it home for my daughter's 16th birthday. So, I got in four nights of observing. The skies this year were not as good as the past three, I think it may be due to scheduling earlier in October. However, I was able to catch up with some old friends and make some new, so all in all, it was a good week. Can't wait until next year!
