I also have a 7" Mak and I love it. Unfortunately the f15 is a killer as far as deep sky astrophotography is concerned. Even with a focal reducer you still get only about f9. One thing I do like, however is the quick setup time. My GEM takes almost an hour to set up the tripod, mount, counterweights, OTA, and do the polar alignment. The LX200 takes about 10 minutes from vehicle to working setup. This is especially great for school outreach where the program starts when it is still too light to see the alignment stars and I can just lie to the scope about the alignment stars and do a sync to a planet or even the moon. I also have a 7" Meade. it is a Classic LX200. I have Georges Autostar upgrade for it when I bought it, I put the origonal electronics back on it and put the Autostar on my 12" LX200. It only made sence because of the extended data base and the fact I use the 7" for L/P visual, and on a few of the brightest DSO objects like M13. The added contrast makes up for the long FL of 15. I was foolish and sold my first one which was the LX50. I was too impatient for cool down time. I also found useing Nikad rechargeables in a back pack at 12v instead of 18, I can leave the fan going and it does not induce vibrations in the image (TIP)

This was an excellent review. I have the ETX-125 but am looking for a little more light gathering without the burden of heavy lifting. This may have me looking for this scope! Thanks Max!

The LX200 classic 7" I used to own is my favorite scope so far. I had always wanted one and when I finally found one for a great deal on Craigslist I jumped on it. I can see myself owning one of these GPS Maks in a few years. Thanks for the great review!

Very nice review of the 7" Mak; I learned much from your review. I do have experience with the ETX-125 and have played around with a friend's Questar 7". One thing that these scopes share is a very long cool down time as you noted. If it were not for this quirk, these scopes might just be the perfect telescope compromise. Thanks for posting!
