I remember that Star Trek episode, I was a lot younger, thinner, and binos were my only magnified view of space. Keep these reports and books comming and I will keep reading them. CS Jonathan

Another great article for binocular observers. By the way, according to the information from Star Fleet Engineering Department the Enterprise had to be traveling at Transwarp speed. That's over 8,000 times (8,333.333 to be exact) the speed of light to reach Andromeda in 300 years.
Thanks Phil, Ed D

Excellent write up! This brings back memories. About 25 years ago I was at a dark sky site and M31 was directly overhead. My 14x70 Fujis have a 4° field and M31 more than filled the fov! I have never seen it in binos any better since.
A couple of years later I was working on my M list. Nearly complete except for M33 and those pesky springtime galaxies. Several/many times I had searched for M33 with my 8-in f/6 newt. On a nice clear and dark Fall night I searched again in vain. I gave up using the scope and just laid on the ground with wide angle 7x35 binos and scanned the area. BANG! There was M33!
Thanks, Phil for bringing back some very nice memories.

I believe that the episode in question is the only one in the original Star Trek which it is definitively portrayed that Captain Kirk, the Casanova of the Cosmos, actually consummates his relationship with the young lady. After he and she clinch, there's a fade out to a commercial, and when we return, she's combing her hair and he's putting his boots on.

Thanks for the replies about this particular column, as well as about the Star Trek episode mentioned. I doubt you'll find the full episode on-line, but for anyone looking to see some of the remastered special effects, you can view them at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=way77qJA5lo
