NGC 457 and a Lesson Learned

I figured that imaging of a reasonably bright OC during a nearly full moon wouldn't pose many problems. That certainly wasn't the case, and I spent much of today attempting to process out uneven field illumination and gradients (I'm too lazy to take flats).

At any rate, here is the final product. I'm at least grateful for good tracking and tight focus.

Hi Res: http://www.astrobin.com/full/23692/?mod=none

Here's hoping next weekend is clear!

Thanks for looking,

Doug

Excellent looking OC, Doug. Star colors are great and you're right that everything is very sharp. Food for thought - Flats take ~2 minutes vs. processing out uneven field illumination and gradients, apparently much of a day.

:-)

Yep, flats are now the order of the day going forward!

Love your Johnny #5 Cluster

I don't take flats either. I use this method of creating artificial flats that seems to work great, as long as it's not something like Andromeda, or other large nebula.
