Micro Focuser for Meade Upgrade? #5497956 - 10/31/12 03:27 PM
I'm considering upgrading my stock focuser on my LS-8. I read that these will reduce the mirror shift when focusing and allow better precision instead of going back and forth. The focusing knob on mine is really not bad and seems pretty tight, but if upgrading makes sense I would do it?
I see the Feather Touch that replaces the stock knob has the 10:1 fine focuser and cost $239. I also see that JMI had a MicroFine push-on with 10:1 and is also $239....I see it was just introduced last year for $200 and don't understand why they increased the price by 20% this year!
Anyway, can anyone who has used one of these on a similar Meade scope give me some recommendations on these?
I added the Meade Zero Image Shift focuser to my LS-8 and I LOVE IT!!!! Vendors should bundle the scope with one. Only caveat is that a 2" diagonal plus the focuser won't get within about 10 degrees of zenith. I've never had sharper focus - owing to vibration, which this accessory dramatically eliminates.
Could not agree more! I have one and it made my lx90 that much better... bedsides the dent in my wallet. But for an LS that has inherent vibration issues due to the tripod & 1 arm the OP may be better off with a Meade Zero Image Shift.
Quote: I replaced my stock LX200 focuser with the 10:1 Feathertouch. It's a remarkable difference.
Many many LX200 users upgrade the microfocuser to aftermarket ones (like Moonlite). There should be quite a few spare Meade focusers on the market cheap. I have one, but it's not mine to sell unfortunately - I'd give it away.
