A new meteorite was recovered in Novato California. It had struck a house after a fireball was witnessed on Oct. 17.

False alarm. The stone found after the house was allegedly struck is not a meteorite. However, another meteorite hunter has found a specimen that is likely to be authentic. So it appears this is a genuine meteorite fall, but the early report of a meteorite being recovered after striking a house is false.

Wow! That's interesting, and embarrassing for the news media. They showed a picture of the "meteorite" on national news.

Carol,
If I read things correctly, it's embarrassing to not only the news media but the field of "science" also. Peter Jenniskens, with the SETI institute, was searching the area with the Carl Sagan Center of the Study of Life in the Universe team. Jenniskens "confirmed" the gray rock was a piece of a meteor.... Oh boy!!!

Now there is word that the original stone may in fact be a meteorite. First they said it was, then they said it was a meteorwrong, and now they are saying it is a meteorite again!
It just goes to show - sometimes even the best can be fooled from time to time. There are a lot of convincing meteorwrongs out there and some people are deceived into thinking they have a real meteorite. You have people who are genuinely misinformed, but hopeful because their stone might represent a financial windfall during rough economic times. Or, some scammers know they have a fake meteorite, but misrepresent it as the real thing to make a quick buck. With the recent high-profile falls (Sutter's Mill, Battle Mountain, Tissint, Katol, etc), an extra measure of caution is probably warranted when examining specimens from a new fall.
Personally, I think the stones are the real deal. They look real and they closely resemble a brecciated chondrite like Park Forest. We should get some kind of official or preliminary verdict soon.

I was informed on the METEOROBS forum that another meteorite was found Monday that resembles the meteorite that Peter discounted after the petrologic microscope examination.
So there are two finds so far?
