This is an early announcement for Saguaro Astronomy Club's large Messier Marathon event, held in the Arizona desert halfway between Phoenix and the California border. The Web site is here.

At this point I have plans for an exceptionally long excursion (for me) of 9 days. I plan to head out to the site on March 8th and stay through the 17th. It seems likely that this long week will be the first time under truly dark skies for my new ES ED152CF and I'm looking forward to capturing 80+ hours of data if the weather cooperates. My recent first light from my backyard seems to indicate that this is going to be a fun telescope for imaging.

I'll bring along the 15" Obsession as well to keep my eyeballs busy while the laptop collects imaging data. I'll be trying out my new Round Table observing platform and Walt's Observing Chair for the first time. My wife got me the observing chair for Christmas (best astronomy wife ever) and I've been bummed not to be able to use it yet. I'm pretty excited about both. I might even break down and do the marathon this year....or I might not. Either way I'm looking forward to spending some desert time with a bunch of friends and hope to see a lot of people that I don't get to hang out with much.

Finally, I can't sit around in the desert all day waiting for it to get dark. There'll be the usual excursions to ridiculously uninhabited and jaw droppingly beautiful parts of the desert if anyone wants to join. I anticipate that you'll be able to find my campsite on the far southern end of the airstrip.

Mike
