Hey Richard, looks like some kind of artifact on the moon. I went out with my nex 5 and the computer batt was lower than I thought and before I could get power to it, it went into sleep mode and reset all my ic cap stuff back to default which I didn't realize until I was done and just got a bunch of blah for the most part.

Does anyone know what causes the patterns around the edge of the disk? I suspect it is an issue of processing, but would appreciate feedback.

Hey Richard I think someone called that the onion effect last year and I think it had something to do with settings in registax. Maybe something with the wavelets. Sorry I can't tell you more, little out of practice as my computer error this morning attests to.

I would get effects like this with my Neximage and the IS DBK from time to time. It was almost always something with the exposure and gain not being enough. My theory is that because the cameras I use capture 8bit frames, there isn't enough shades of color or tone to sharpen using wavelets in Registax. The planet just isn't bright enough on the edges when the exposure and/or gain are too low. Even in my best captures, I still get the onion ringing effect in the blackness of space surrounding the planet I'm capturing. Try raising the gain or exposure next time.

Thanks, Herr and Chris. I've been experimenting with different gain/exposure combinations--seems to change with the scope and the object and the conditions. As if it wasn't complicated enough! (but always fun)
Here's my Jupiter from this morning.
