CG-5 GT Malfunction

I have two nextar hand controllers. I plug one in it says 'initializing' then goes blank. The other one says 'intializing' then says 'no response'. I tried to update the firmware but the handcontroller won't respond. Any advice?

The first thing I check when dealing with a Celestron mount with your symptoms is the power supply. I currently have CG5 and have had a couple of CGEs. Very susceptible to faulty power supplies, especially low voltage. Are you using a battery pack or an AC adapter?
Also, make sure that the plug is secure in the socket. A common fix is to get something sharp and slightly spread the plug to ensure a tight fit.
Also, try to get to the menu part that allows you to reset the controller to its default settings then enter the information fresh. Hope one thing or the other helps!

As David has said, you need to check your power to the mount. You need to have at least 12.4 volts at the mount under load. The next thing is try hitting the 'UNDO' button repeatedly and see if this restores the HC. Check the HC connection to the mount and make sure the socket on the mount is good. Look into the socket and make sure the fine wire contacts are aligned correctly. When the display reads 'No Response' is there a number displayed too? Because both your HC have trouble communicating with the MC board, the problem probably lies somewhere inside the mount. You may want to open the lower cover and check the connections on the MC and power boards. If you can get the HC into programming mode, re-flash the HC and MC. I have 3 CG-5s and this type problem has always been one of connections for me.

How do you take the cover off the cg-5 gt. There are apparently 3 screws, but one of them in the middle cover on the RA axis is some kind of plastic screw that won't come off. Do I pop it off?

You have to hold the outside ring of the screw retainer and unscrew the 'Phillips' screw.

Thanks, does this require a special tool? I think I got the screw partially out but it takes a lot of finagaling.

The Astronomy Boy site is a good reference, but is shows the CG-5 manual version mount, not the goto model. It does not address the removal of the motor covers or anything else to do with the electronics of the CG-5GT.

thanks all. Got the CG-5 cracked open, looked for loose connections, did some trouble shooting. didn't work. It's off to celestron but appreciate the help!
