It’s nearly time for my monthly New Moon spotting challenge, which becomes a little easier as we pull further away from the autumnal equinox. A few North Americans may sight the one-day-old Moon on November 14. More will have luck the following evening.
My article describing the waxing crescent Moon’s first appearance of the coming lunar month appears under the links for my preview graphics at www.CurtRenz.com/moon
Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date, time and time zone.
Below is a link to a photo that I took from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Moon aged 2.1 days on 2011 OCT 28 at 18:18 CDT.

Thank you Curt! I know I can always come here and learn about my chances for sighting the newborn moon.

Hi all, I managed to image it from my location using an old Canon 10D and a real cheap 80-300mm zoom. Clouds almost skunked me to the west. Real easy visual observation!
Location: Baja California (31N) Pacific time zone, can't remember the exact time but it was like 5-10 minutes after sunset

Well done, Mike. Glad you got to spot the one-day-old Moon. Many more will see it tonight. Thanks for sharing your photo. I tried last night from Chicagoland, but the soup near the horizon was too thick.

I got one tonight as soon as I got home and it was getting pretty low and getting into the low clouds. Used canon T3i and canon lens at 300mm, ISO 1600 and 2 seconds.

My first capture for the month.
500mm DSLR. Couldn’t use the scope, moon too low.

Thanks for your fine submissions, Ralph and Neil.
As explained previously, on Wednesday after sunset the Moon was lost in the Chicagoland red horizon muck. This evening from Arlington Heights, Illinois I took the photo linked below of the two-day-old Moon on 2012 NOV 15 @ 17:06 CST.
