8 Hour Jupiter Session!
      #5512728 - 11/10/12 06:14 AM

Greetings all,

Attached are 5 disk drawings and a strip map I made on the night of 05-06 November 2012. After a month of almost continual cloud cover, the clouds parted and I was able to observe the planet from 2200UT- 0510UT. The main of rthing of interest was an enormous rift which was present in the NEB. The rift was rather obvious, and by making transit timings, I estimated it to be some 35 degrees long. It was hard to say if the rift was one long rift or a series of smaller ones whose boundaries were beyond the resolution of the telescope.

By 0407UT, oval BA and the GRS were on show. It seemed to me that BA had more colour than the GRS and was darker and more prominant.

Best wishes,
-Paul.

Hi Paul, just got off ALPO and noticed your observations. Well done. I like the strip sketch, gotta try doing one...an all nighter, for sure.

You show some amazing details. The small ovals in the STB/Z are a great catch. Almost impossible in my 6"...I think. The large white patch at CM 162 is amazing. I'd love to observe it. I do catch some small bright patches up against the base of the festoons near that CM. Maybe that's the same feature.

Paul, beautiful illustrations in addition to being a wealth of detail! I applaud the amount of time you putinto the session. Fantastic catch with the rift. I'm also loving that strip sketch. Nicely done.

Paul, you got close to a full rotation, that was a feat!

As for the rift, I may have sketched it last night; is it the same detail you mention (I uploaded the sketch on a new thread)?

Steady skies,

Ivano

Paul,

Well done set of drawings--you have a lot of stamina! I agree that Oval BA appears a shade darker than its big brother.

I looked at Jupiter in the early morning hours of 11 November (0900 UT CM II: 27°) and that rift system framed by the two large blue festoons was still evident. The seeing was deteriorating so I didn't attempt a sketch.
