The CSC had predicted excellent conditions after local midnight and Attila Danko and Co. were pretty close. The eyepiece view was so sharp at 261x that I bumped it up to 340x. While that view was almost as good, the contrast and colors suffered so I went back to 261x for the bulk of the observation. I never bothered with any filters this time. At the beginning of the session, Oval BA was approaching the preceding limb but still quite visble as a small. pale, undefined splotch. By the time I was ready to sketch, the oval was so close to the limb that I could only discern a hint of it. The view of the Great Red Spot (GRS) was striking in that it was completely encircled by a bright border. The turbulent wake following the GRS appeared to be about as large as the great storm itself. Colors were in evidence, perhaps because of the good conditions. I don't usually see much color, although the large aperture of my Cat has helped me considerably. The GRS and Oval BA were both a pale salmon color and the big festoon on the southern edge of the North Equatorial Belt was a much darker blue than what I am used to seeing. The South Tropical Zone has appeared yellowish for several observations now. Ganymede and Io were escorting the King on the preceding side with Callisto following and Europa behind the scene. I used a 2B and 4B pencil for the sketch. The template was larger than what I normally use and some detail was lost in compression. Sure is nice to have good seeing once in a while. I thought I was going nuts, seemed to see a bit of it earlier tonight as the GRS was coming 'round the limb. Watched the GRS transit right up until that same trailing dark spot came into view. I could not really tell if there was a festoon looping off that darker mass on the NEB. But, I thought there might have been a very faint one. Yea, the polar regions are quite tough, lately. Great sketch, Michael. I am pleased you are observing and sharing it. Jupiter has just been tickling my fancy, glad you are getting some, too. I know you like to observe the Sun, which is an equally fascinating target for the same dynamic reasons. It's funny how excellent seeing often trumps the need for filters. Getting Jove to remain sharp between 250-350x is a pleasure (if not flat out intimidating while sketching). I also imagine the colors popped due to the transparency you were fortunate to have. One thing is for certain, when Attila gives me dark blue squares in the seeing line, I tell everyone I know that this kid will be unreachable for the evening.
