Like most, observing in the driveway presents challenges when it comes to street lights. Having a good friend who works for the utility company definitely paid off on this little project.
Last summer, I asked my friend Chris about installing a shield on the Cobra head light that is at the end of my drive. He gladly took care of that request knowing that I observed from the drive with my big Dob. Unfortunately, it didn't solve my lighting problem. He came back a couple of weeks later and painted the side facing the house. It was better, but not the best.
I saw him last week and asked about the possibility of making an extension for the shield that would block the light on my side of the light.
A couple of hours later he shows up at the house with a new shield and said to have at it and he'd be back by Monday after noon to put it up. Oh, by the way, he offered to move the existing shield up the street to the next light while he was here. This weekend, I took an hour or so and made a shield for the light at the end of the drive and one for the shield that would be relocated.
He showed up this afternoon and put them up. Here are before and after pictures. Much better!!!
By the way, they are 4 second and 6 second shots respectively....
While my observing site here at the house is no where to the level of my darksky site, it's definitely much better and will be much more enjoyable.

Good for you and thanks for posting these pictures. Perhaps I can persuade the utility's to do the same!

Do you have any close-up pictures? I am sure the town here will help if there is an easy solution. Thanks for the ideas and photos.

Took some close up pictures today. Also included a shot of my rough pattern. I made it out of craft paper.
The material I used is PVC coated aluminum coil stock. This is what I used in my construction business for wrapping window jambs and making soffit covers. It's thicker than flashing and much easier to work with.
As you can see, I used 1/8" pop rivets to secure the extension on the light shield.

Thanks for the pictures. Now it's my turn. I'll see what the town has to say. Off the topic: BTW, do you have any pics of your 18" Dob?

My 18" forum page
Eric, here is a link to the original post when I completed the 18". The more I use it, the more I'm lovin' it!
By the way, you and anyone else who wants to approach their local utility company about allowing you to do something like are more than welcome to print these pictures as an example of your plans.

Thanks for the link and the OK to use your pics.
That Dob is a beauty. The red base and the form-fit shroud are quite something. You should be rightly proud!

Paint. A campground near here did it (black). The light only goes straight down.
Timers work well too.

Looks good, glad you got that light taken care of. Not having the glare in your eyes will make viewing from home that much more enjoyable.
I could use a bulb removed from the light in the middle of my front yard. Would give me a better view than my backyard does.
