A cold night but the atmosphere settled down as the local time approached 11 pm. At nightfall I set up two telescopes and gave them 5 hours to cool down. At 11:15 pm local time I began sketching Jupiter and fixed in place the positions of Io, its shadow, the GRS and oval BA (Red Spot Jr.). Since I was getting a much better view of Jupiter in the 18 inch scope, I decided to use it for my sketch. My 10 inch scope is driven but I no longer have a working drive for the 18 inch scope, so I don’t often use it for sketching. The shadow of Io was at the northwest margin of the GRS. Io was diagonally across the GRS and just beyond Jupiter’s following limb. The oval BA in the south tropical zone seemed to have a dark disturbance above it in the south temperate zone. Two clearly visible festoons were projecting southward from the north equatorial belt. The southern edge of this belt was noticeably darker than the rest of the belt. And I could clearly see the north tropical zone and the north temperate belt with its darker northern margin. This is the best view of Jupiter I have seen in nearly a year.

Frank, there is something so inexplicably 3-D about your image. Fantastic drawing!

Norme, Tom and Jason,
Thank you all for your comments. We are having a brief spell of clear steady nights that we usually get in early fall. I'll take what I can get in the clear sky department.

Good for you, Frank. Having had below average seeing and cloud cover, one can be envious.

Outstanding sketchwork, Frank. Congratulations on the seeing--you made the most of it--nice detail!
I think the 3-D appearance mentioned by Jason is a function of Io standing off the following limb with that jet black shadow on the Jovian disk.
These cold nights take some getting used to, don't they? When I looked at M1 the other night, the temp was 24°F and I was wearing 7 layers. The previous night was just as cold, but I wasn't wearing as many layers--learned my lesson.

Frank, Fantastic sketch. You really captured a llot of detail in Jov's belts. The shadow of Io on GRS is an eye catcher.

Norme, Christopher,Michael and Jim,
Thanks for your comments and kind remarks. --- Michael, As the years go by the cold gets me more quickly. My cold limit for sketching is about 20 degrees. I can't sketch and shiver at the same time. -- Jim Io and its shadow on either side of the GRS was wonder to see.

Thank you for your nice words.

I don't know if you were able to observe this weekend but the sky was cooperating in the very early morning.
I was out tonight sketching the Moon at nightfall and I just squeaked it in before the clouds.

Hello Uwe,
I hope those clear good seeing skies reach you soon. It seems to be over with here for a while as clouds dominate again. Thank you.
