Hi all,
Weather and time permitted me a view of the King with the new scope. The subtle SPR region did not make it though the scanning though so I restored it as best I could with Paint.Net. Otherwise, I am pretty pleased with the view through the shiny new EON.
*I have adjusted the image gamma and contrast to reveal the original SPR and bring other features closer to the eyepiece view. Tricky business this!

Mel, the scanned image appears too "bright" on my monitor.

I have adjusted the contrast in the OP. It was way too bright.

Did you loose something in the scanning process, Mel? It's much better bright wise.
Ah, sorry, shouldn't spend time discussing scanners, but that you're out observing Jupiter in a very nice scope.
Well done, Mel. I look forward to seeing more of your work. I'm very curious about the EON 120.

Mel,
Very nice Jupiter sketch. Like you I have a difficult time getting the brightness and contrast to be true to the sketch for Jupiter. When they are too light like this a camera in the daylight with a manual setting beats a scanner. Nice work.

YES!
Mel's sketch accurately represents what I am currently seeing in my 17mm EP.
EQ bands.
A thin band above the upper EQ band.
And a definite "shading" in the northern hemisphere.
Great sketch!

Wow--lots of Jupiter sketches to see. Congratulations on the new scope, Mel. It looks like it will give you plenty of good views.
By 9:30PM your time, Jupiter is just barely above the soup. Try looking when it is a little higher.
Also, try adjusting the gamma (midtones) after you preview but before you make your final scan--it should help with the contrast.

Many thanks to all above for the comments and encouragement. I have adjusted the OP image to what seems a more realistic ep view. Sketching in the dark is quite the juggling act but has a gentle learning curve. I sure do appreciate the helpful advice.
@Norme, the Orion EON line were well regarded APO doublets with 80, 100 & 120mm (I think)objectives. Beautiful finish with 2-speed focussers at a pretty reasonable price.
Very shortly after mine was delivered, the line went missing from Orion's catalogue. I believe I was very lucky to get one. A prevailing rumour is that the Japanese supplier of the glass was a tsunami casualty. Who knows?

Mel, same here. Shortly after I bought my Orion 150 Mak they went missing, too. Go figure, it's a great scope, as well. Maybe they are just not popular, or are being bought by another distributor? Who knows. But, like you, I feel fortunate to have one. Had my eye on an EON.
