Somewhat bright elliptical halo extended NNW to SSE. Suddenly brighter core region. Scintillating stellar nucleus becomes visible with averted vision. Reddish 10th magnitude star south, slightly following. 12th magnitude star south following. Companion galaxy NGC 7339 not visible. So what aperture would be sufficient to reveal the companion galaxy under less than ideally dark skies such as my own? Would it take at least a 200mm, or could the galaxy be at least spotted with a somewhat smaller telescope? Opinions? Observations? From my backyard, NGC7332 was nice silver line in 130mm refractor but no trace of NGC7339 althoug I was really looking for it. It was quite faint and appeared only after spending some time at the eyepiece, but was confirmed by its elongation and orietation, almost perpendicular to NGC 7332. On the other hand, NGC 7332 is a nice galaxy, with a bright, almost starlike nucleus. It reminds me of NGC 3115 in Sextans. This galaxy has magnitude 12.2, and the faintest ones I've seen under that sky are around mag. 11.5. NGC 7332 was a very nice bright streak of ghostly light with hints of a central area while it took some time with AV to bring out 7339!! I didnt notice it at first but when i went back to it i could just make out its ghostly glow , after i finally caught a glimpse of it , it was visible with direct vision!! If you know exactly where it is with regards to position to NGC 7332 you should be able to find it!! Nice report!!! Detection might have been easier if not for the eternal 'average' transparency of northcentral Wisconsin, but we have to work with what we've got, don't we? I have seen them a number of times with my 6-inch Dob.
