Well, looks like a double header. Io and GRS last night and Europa's shadow dancing with BA tonight!
I knew the GRS would transit around 1630UT and that Europa would be in eclipse during that period. What I did not expect to see was Europa's shadow nearly dead center in oval BA as it rounded Jupiter's trailing limb around 1500 UT tonight 15 Nov 2012.
15 Nov 1530 UT: Europa is nearly on the trailing limb as the GRS comes round into view. Oval BA and Europa's shadow leading the GRS. Europa's shadow appeared to be dead center in Oval BA. Seeing about 7 or 8 of 10, transparency mag 5.
1550 UT, Europa is visible in the limb darkening south of and trailing the GRS. It is just south of the darker belt trailing the GRS. Europa's shadow and BA are near the meridian with the shadow approaching the leading edge of BA.
1610UT, Europa no longer visible and oval BA and the shadow are just past the meridian. During the best seeing, it appears Europa's shadow is on BA's leading edge. It does appear Europa orbits just a bit faster than Jupiter's rotation. Seeing is less favorable 6 to 7/10, transparency mag 5.
Wow, twice back to back amazing views. This occurred about noon US eastern time, but it was visible here in Asia. The event just ended, so waiting and hoping someone imaged it.

Yea, usually got to wait a few days, but yes...like browsing the imaging forum. It's nice to confirm those things that are hard to see.

I have been checking for pictures and have only seen one for the Io/GRS event.
Now I have another one to look for.

Thanks, Eddgie. Yea, when you reported GRS/Io, I felt kind of left out. But, God smiled and said unto me, "behold, you can observe one, too."
As for images, I might expect ALPO to post a few soon enough. Chris Go images around the same time I observe. He may have captured it, along with a few other amateur imagers in the area.

Perfect. Beautifully centered in BA.
No matching pictures yet for this, and so far only one of the Io/GRS/Shadow train.
But while pictures will maybe show more detail, I am delighted to have seen it myself.
Even thought the image did get reflected off of a mirror..

Yea, this even was occurring during daylight US time. I have not seen any posted images, either.
It's always nice to see the object for yourself, IMO, reflected or otherwise. Images are certainly beautiful and an art form of sorts, per se. But, I get more kick from visual, ancient photon or not.

That is a wild alignment. The almost immediate feedback of the internet and imaging is really amazing. Prior to the internet you had two magazines and a bimonthly journal and all thiseneat alignments and such I'd see now and again were like a secret to only me. Not that others didn't share in it, you'd just never know of them. The internet has truly revolutionized amateur astronomy.
I like your visual account Norme its funny that you captured it like that saith was rounding the bend.

A great observation and sketch--and impeccable timing. I remember the past couple of apparitions when Oval BA was hard to detect. You've got it with a bulls eye.

Michael, exactly, BA has always been on my bucket list. Now that it's easier and got scratched from the list, I am beginning to wonder about the time I have left on this Earth.
