Hello everyone, I have a question about Comet Hergenrother. Does anyone know if it faded back to normal or not? It seems something's happened because twice I looked for it from my home and it failed to appear even through the 15-inch. I imagine it's still visible from a dark area but it appears from a city at least it's already out of sight. I am glad I acted upon the reports of its outburst when I did, otherwise I would have missed out on it.

Well, four nights ago I saw it from a red zone with one of my 10 inch scopes and estimated it's mag at 11. Most others were saying it was MUCH brighter...until a couple of days later. Then, the popular wisdom was that it was 10.5 to 11.5 back on the 16th/17th after all.
I was out tonight, but was using a 5" so I didn't even try for it. On the 16th/17th, I commented on how it was only a little brighter than the background sky in the 10". The sky was pretty transparent that night too.
Like you, I'm glad I got a chance to see it!

From what I understand Hergenrother has faded from its maximum of 9.1 but how much I'm not sure.

Estimating comet magnitudes can be tricky. There are 2 observations posted on the Yahoo Comet Obs group
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/CometObs/
that estimate the comet's magnitude as of 19 October at 9.4 and 9.7. There are also 2 observations posted for 18 October that put the magnitude at 9.6 and 10.5 (quite a range there).
Keep in mind that magnitude estimates should be made with the smallest aperture possible--preferably a good pair of binoculars. I made my magnitude estimate of 10.0 on 17 October using 15x70 binoculars.

I was able to see it clearly on the 20th at 0213 UT high in the Eastern sky with the Moon at 27% illumination in the Western sky. It appeared much smaller because of the moonlight washing out the faintest portions of it.

Hmmmm, that was the same night when I was looking for it from my light polluted city. Mobile Alabama is really a white zone area because the Milkyway is only visible from here after a hurricane creates widespread power outages. It must have faded enough that without at least going to the darker site to the west of Mobile the local club uses, seeing it was impossible from home that night.

I needed yesterday (22 october) averted vision at x92 to detect the comet. It looked like a faint galaxy. SQM 18.5 (due to Moon and lichtpollution). In no way it was the beautiful comet of two weeks ago (see sketch). So I guess the party is over

Still picking it up with a 10 second exposure off a C14. Seen on the 20th and 23rd, with a clear rotation to the head last night. Still about as bright as the nearby stars (which seem to be mag 12). I track the comet for 3 minutes to bring out tail details.

So that might have been the cause of the outburst to begin with. If so, this might be the last hurrah for this comet like the NEAT and Elinin comets that disintegrated during their approach to the Sun.

With the Moon gone I've been able to glimpse the comet last two night. Estimate 11.5 to 12 Magnitude. I do not detect a double nucleus visually.
Observation with 250MM F12 M/C, with a range of Magnification of 73X to 231X

I saw 168/P through a 17.5" TeleKit Dob equipped with a Zambuto mirror last night. It was far dimmer than when I observed it last month.

Yes, the comet is fading but it still shows a broad fan tail in my latest image. 10 X 3 minutes @ ISO 800 crop from full DSLR frame. PowerNewt 8-2.8ED @ F 2.8
It has been fun chasing this one. Looking forward to the next.
Cheers

I looked for 168P on 11/14 with excellent transparency and 11/18 with fair transparency with my C14 and I could not detect it visually. Kinda surprised me.

Its gotten really dim. I tried for Hergenrother on the 14th, too, with an 8" F/4 scope. It barely registered with a 3 minute exposure at ISO 1600. I moved up to ISO 3200, which is very noisy and repeated the exposure. This is all I got:
