Their atmosphere has carbon components that absorb bluish light, leaving reds and oranges to tint the star's color. I know the Sky and Telescope "Pocket Sky Atlas" identifies 55 carbon stars on its charts using a (c) label. In another thread (click here) I posted a listing of exactly what those 55 stars are. What other media resources are there for carbon star observers? Please post your replies for others to consider. However, I've found quite a few in each that don't show visible spectral color typical of carbon stars. There's much overlap in the three lists, but with a little time you can combine them into a list customized to your desire. Just scan down the spectrum column and look for the C classification. Another resource would be Burnham's Celestial Handbook, variable star list in each constellation, although here one would be looking for the spectral classifications of R or N which were superceded by the newer classification of C. Less daunting lists can be found in Webb's Celestial Objects for Common Telescopes in the index under Variable Stars and Stars with Interesting Spectra, though again, as with Burnham's, the spectral classification would be R or N, not the newer C. Print media, old school stuff, I know, but I am a and I tend to turn to my library first, computer second when searching for information. Great. Thanks... And quoting from another thread, let's add: The RASC Observer's Handbook 2013 has a list of about 135 carbon stars with names (e.g. WZ Cas) and RA/Dec, with magnitude ranges. I remember Brian Skiff giving me a number for B-V when sorting the list, I think I made the cut off at 2.5 or something like that.
