4th grade astronomy night new
      #5521279 - 11/15/12 01:58 PM Attachment (70 downloads)

I sponsor an astronomy night for my sons (former) 4th grade teacher. This is the second year we are doing this. One in November (Jupiter) and one in May (Saturn). We use a friends horse farm on the north fork of long island. Here are the T shirts I give the kids at the end of the night.

That really is awesome. They'll remember that night for a long time.

So we had the 4th grade astronomy night. Temperature was approaching 40*F. About 60 people attended, 28 of them students. The sky was clear (not a common occurrence in the northeast this year) and the seeing fair. Telescopes were setup; a 10" GSO dob, C6 on a voyager mount and a solid tube 8" F8 reflector on a homemade dob mount. We observed Jupiter, M31, M36, M37, M38, the double cluster, and Albireo. Quite a few parents and students were really amazed and enthusiastic. Just wait until they see Saturn in the spring!

Saw Jupiter Saturday night for the first time. Won't be the last, that's for sure. It was partly cloudy, so viewing wasn't the best; kind of in and out. But it was there. I saw three bands and the GRS.

Isn't it risky to have the t-shirts made before you know the weather?

Well... I had them made 48 hours before, but I have picked 3 nights (6 months in advance)now over the last year and all have been cloudless with no wind. I obsess for about 2 weeks watching the forecast and radar. I guess the real answer is that I'm lucky and that's the risk I take.

Rob,
Give a shout out in the spring for Saturn night. I'm an Islander and occasion Custer Observatory on the North Fork. I would not mind bringing out a refractor or two to help inspire some youngsters. It would be a great way to honor my 4th grade teacher whom took us on a field trip to the Vanderbilt Planetarium nearly 40 years ago.
