What will you give this holiday season new
      #5523588 - 11/16/12 10:52 PM

In the equipment thread there is a post on what we want for this holiday season. I posted what I wanted but in reflecting, I got it all wrong. In the spirit of the season, I think I need to look at what I am going to give to others regarding the hobby than just what I want to receive. So in terms of that I think I've decided to take what I would spend on me for the holidays and spend it on my observing friends. That is the goal.

So in the spirit of the season, do you plan to give anything to others in terms of the hobby and if so, what would you give if you were to spend $X amount per friend?

For example. My four friends do not have an adjustable red light so I will purchase each of them one. I will give another a copy of Sue French's latest and to another a Home Depot card to aid in his ATM work or the wood to build a chair like mine. Just some thoughts on how I can move from myself to thinking of others. Again, I think this is in line with the nature of the season.

Not in terms of the hobby, but we did adopt a poor family through a local charity. We're bringing them Christmas dinner and gifts for mom, dad, and the kids.

Seemed more important than buying astro toys.

At work we annually support a home for moms with children. This is a facility for abused and indigent women with children that had nowhere else to go. We donate food, clothing, money, and other Christmas Presents for the Children. For some of these moms and kids, it's the first time in their lives they've gotten a peaceful happy Christmas.

In terms of this hobby, Santa will be bringing a couple of astrobooks for my 3 yr. old daughter . She's the only person I know who's absolutely fascinated with my astrobooks, truly interested in looking up and pointing at things in the night sky. Maybe I should just go ahead and get her that 16" dob she's always wanted !

Planispheres are good gifts for people who express an interest in the night sky but haven't really started observing.

At our astronomy club's Christmas party, I gave a Pocket Sky Atlas. It made the guy real happy.

We're adopting a family living in a shelter and buying each of them the presents (necessities really) on their wish list. Nary an astronomy item on the list, sadly.

Regards,

Jim

Food for the less fortunate here in Jackson Hole, often ranked as the richest county in the country. Tomorrow let us ponder those contradictions.

Enjoy the night sky.

We're hosting thanksgiving. I recently bought a 10 inch GSO dob. I will show Jupiter and the moon to anyone willing to step outside and have a look. That will be my astronomy gift to anyone who takes me up on it. I hope they all do.

In addition to our donations to shelters and adopting (anonymously) a local family, I will give as many hours of sidewalk astronomy as my warm booties will let me.

well its not much, but Im rebuilding a tasco telescope to give to my neice and two sons.
Tore down the scope today, cleaned the rust and gunk off the lens.cleaned and regreased the focuser, swapped out the finder for a dual finder bracket model, mounted it on a eq one, tested it with a cheap square diagonal, and a 20mm huygenian ep, not bad.
Scope by the way came out of the back of a local garage, he said it had sat in the rain snow etc, lol.
Now I just need ot find a couple eps and a better diagonal, but heys its better than nothing, lol.

Any advise on shipping it , mount and all to Omaha Nebraska?

I'm seriously considering giving my neices kids my 80mm short tube. I might even include my photo tripod to put it on. They're 8.5 and 6.5 years old. It's no great scope but I figure they can look at the moon and Jupiter/Saturn with it. Also, since they live in a very rural area, with nice dark skies, they might be able to pick out (with some help) some star clusters and brighter DSO's. I'll include an erecting prizm so they can use it for wild animal spotting during the day. They have turkey, deer, coyote, owls, and all sorts of animals roaming their land outside their picture window. These kids are spoiled rotten with toys up the ying yang so maybe something like this will be more unique to them. I just wonder if they're a little too young to appreciate it. I guess at worst it may be a couple years before they do. I've decided not to use it as a finder on my dob so I'm not going to use it anyway.
