When first starting out in this hobby with an entry level camera it's tempting to think the camera is holding you back. At least that's what I thought until quite recently.
This shot of M1 was done last night with an original Meade DSI one shot color, which for the reason stated above got very little use. I pre-ordered it before they were even released and to my consternation about three months after it was released Meade came out with the b/w Pro model which I just 'had' to have. Since then this DSIc has been sitting on a shelf.

That's freakin sweet! I just picked up an original DSI here for 100 bucks, it's on it's way to my house right now.

Thanks Shawn. If I'd known the DSIc was capable of shots like that I probably wouldn't have let it collect so much dust all these years.
A lot of the credit goes to StarTools. I find the 'Color' tool very intuitive and the 'Repair' tool is indispensible for tweaking the stars into shape. The DSIc has way 'not square' pixels and I think that contributes to the difficulties of getting truly round stars with this camera.

Hi Tim thanks. I never did give this camera a fair shake so I think I'm gonna leave it on for a while and see what I can do with it.

Hey Warren thanks.
I gotta say it surprised the heck out of me. I didn't think the DSIc was capable of anything close to that. I think back when it was new most of the 'hot shots' who knew what they were doing bailed on it for the b/w Pro1 that came out a short time later.

Wonderful image. M1 was the very first object I imaged with my original DSI. It was quite an amazing camera and a great value.

I know, right? Appreciate all the nice comments. I'm gonna keep working with it for a while to see if I didn't just get lucky with M1.

Hey Mike,
Just wanted you to know that you made the Astrobin Facebook APOD. It's pretty amazing what you can do with a DSI and some talent.

Great image. It's nice to see the DSIc coming off shelves, and finding new life. I have the color and monochrome versions of the DSI Pro II, and am completely satisfied with the images I take (when I get the chance!). This simple CCD has been underrated I believe.

Mike,
This is fantastic take on M1. I wonder how much it is quality of the camera vs. your expertise in processing pictures. I think that without the second one no camera matters. Therefore a safe bet would be for the expertise growing over time. Congratulations.

Wouter, Al, thanks guys.
Jerr, I have learned a few things about processing since I used this camera last. But I'd have to say most of the credit for this shot goes to a lucky night of good seeing and StarTools.
The DSIc is not without it's quirks. Football shaped stars being the worst imo. That's where StarTools really saves the day...errr night. Darks can be tricky too, if your not running some kind of cooling. I have an Outback cooler on mine.
