Telescope: Meade SC8 @ f/10, Orion Atlas EQ-G Guider: Orion Deluxe Off-axis Guider, DSI Pro III, PHD Camera: Canon Rebel T2i, Orion Imaging Sky Glow Filter Exposure: 60x90sec, ISO 3200 saved as RAW Darks: Internal Flat: Synthetic Software: Backyard EOS, Deep Sky Stacker, Photoshop
NGC1023 is variously described as either an elliptical galaxy or as a barred spiral, though the later seems to be the more modern and accepted description. What strikes me as interesting about this galaxy is that its relatively high surface brightness makes in an easy visual object, yet photographically it shows so little detail. Just off of the eastern edge you can just barely see what may be a faint irregular galaxy that is a satellite of NGC1023. About halfway to the top of the image you can also glimpse several tiny background galaxies. The transparency wasn’t the best on this particular evening so I may revisit this object once the moon leaves the evening sky.

This is a small/faint one; I would have tried, e.g., 10x600sec ISO 1600 instead.

Interesting little galaxy, John - I don't think I've seen this before.

"I would have tried, e.g., 10x600sec ISO 1600 instead."
Heh, heh, nice idea, but under my sky that would have given me a white screen. I'd have to go all the way down to ISO 400 to try and go 600 seconds under these conditions. Could be fun.
If I get some time off over the holidays this year I may tinker with this. I wouldn't hold my breath though, I haven't had a vacation in 9 years. Ugh!
Have fun!
P.S.
You bring up a good point though. The problem I have is that we simply don't have enough clear nights to spend experimenting, so you kinda go with what ya know. I'm going to be doing some bench top experiments to find out.
One crisis at a time...

I use IDAS LPS-P2-48 and can go much longer without over exposing from equivalently polluted sky. Thx

Coolness. This was actually taken with an IDAS LPS-P2. I forgot that I had this filter installed in my off-axis guider, the Orion filter is in my SN6. Both are very nice fliters.
P.S.
Keep in mind that on this particular evening the challenge had more to do with high humidity and moonlight than local light pollution.
