Dear all, I would be interested in knowing how you diy'd your dome shutters, how do you prevent it from falling off/flying away once it is opened? I am refering to the DIY plywood domes only not the premoulded fibreglass ones. Regs

I posted a similar question a while back: http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Board/Observatory/N...
I really like the I beam method although for the size dome I'm attempting to build it's probably not viable.

Still working on the project, so can't show finished photos yet. The tracks are rolled C-channel. Door will be 14' long. Tracks bolt to both sides of shutter opening. Eight wheels ride in the tracks. They will keep the shutter from lifting and limit movement side-to-side. A standard garage door opener will be used to open and close.
A friend has built eight domes so far, and uses similar methods.

The 32 foot long tracks will be mount along the dome opening and back over the back of the dome. They will be mounted when the fiberglassing is completed.

Wow! Tom, that's going to be a beauty! How large is it, and what scope(s) will reside in it?

Hi Carol,
The thread has been running here for a few months.
It is our new 24' dome for our 42" Dob. It is being built under fabulous skies north of Deming, NM, .
