Pentax J60 new

If everything goes as planned I will have purchased a Pentax J60 on Labor Day. It has a nice altaz.mount with three .965 eyepieces-25mm Kellner-12.5mm Kellner-6mm Ortho. The refractor scope is 60mm x 700mm. I understand it was made by Asahi Optical Company 1938-2002 Japan. Asahi means "morning or rising sun". Thanks for any feedback.

Good luck with your pending purchase. The J60 is a very nice scope, beautifully finished, the mount is robust for a 60mm...

Yes I did pick-up this scope and it's very nice indeed. My camera will not transfer pictures here for some reason-but if you "Google" you can find pictures. The 25mm & 12.5mm Kellner & 6mm Ortho do not have any stamping on them saying Japan or company symbol. Just the eyepiece name and fl. They are sharp but still .965 eyepieces. I need to buy a hybrid diagonal to use my 1.25" eyepeices. It's been humid at nights & fog has been a problem so I have backed off on observations for now. I'm tempted to put the J60 on my Vixen Polaris mount, but again the Pentax mount is so nice & moves smoothly.

After over 1 hour of observations tonight under clear/cool skies I find 60mm Pentax-J60 to be better than I expected. Sure the Owl star cluster in Cassiopeia doesn't "show up" as it does in my 102mm Bosma,but I was rather surprised how sharp double stars appear in a 60mm scope. Now I'm talking about the brighter ones such as Gamma Delphinus,Alpha Hercules,Beta & Kappa Cepheus,Iota Cassiopeia just to name a few.

The three .965 eyepieces performed very well in that I might just keep this scope with original equipment. I can't wait to view the Moon & planets. There is very little CA on bright stars & with the 6mm Ortho at 117x nice concentric rings on stars. The 25mm Kellner at 28x & 12.5mm Kellner at 56x enhances the Pentax's excellent optics.

I have heard nothing but good things about those J60's.

Is it sold on already? Maybe I'm too late to comment...

But, I certainly enjoyed the views I had from mine. The whole package oozed quality, and the views of Mars were quite revealing for a small aperture. The mount was a little masterpiece.

Congrats to whoever the new owner is!
