GoldenEye update
      #5540680 - 11/26/12 05:14 PM

http://www.astrogoods.com/stone.goldeneye.jpg

This is my modified and upgraded XT8 of which I have previously reported.

The list of mods and upgrades is as follows:

Base scope was $300 back in 2006, The last of the XT8's to be sold with the rack and pinion focuser, eyepiece holder and navigation knob. Also included was the basic laser collimator that I don't use.

Moonlite CR2, $300
Bob's knobs for secondary, $15
Fender washer for secondary, 34 cents
FirstBase mount, $200
Telrad, $40
digital inclinometer, $30
flocking opposite the focuser, free from a fellow CNer
Tectron collimation tools
Doughnut magnet counterweights, $15

I have not applied ebony star to the alt bearings on the advice of CNers in a previous post. Works great as is.

Last week we split epsilon llyrae at only 109x and saw abundant surface detail on Jupiter. Last summer we were able to use the digital inclinometer to find Saturn in broad daylight. Tracking near the zenith/Dobson's hole is doable at 300x-plus.

I'm not sure what the next mod will be. Any suggestions?

If you already have a digital inclinometer perhaps an azimuth setting circle mod might also come in handy??

Nice Dob!!!

How about a slewing handle like the one I have on Mighty Mouse? Makes it much easier to rotate scope when viewing near zenith. The location of the pivot bolt allows the handle to rotate into the base (OTA removed), getting it out of the way for transport to dark skies.

Good ideas so far....I haven't done the az circle yet because I couldn't figure out how to print one. If someone is going to NEAF and could bring one I could cover the cost of material and printing...

Where did you get the slew handle parts? I haven't had any major problems with the navigation knob.

One mod for which I have been searching for a long time is a decal/bumper sticker of the James Bond movie, "GoldenEye" for the side of the scope, ala Mickey Mouse in the above example.

if you tell me the dimension I could format this az setting circle so you could take it to kinko's and have them print it on their large scale printers and laminate it.

from this site. setting circle

it would take 2 mins.

Get the appropriate sized setting circle as a .pdf, copy it onto a flash drive, and take it to Kinko's to be printed on one of their large format printers. For regular paper it should not cost more than a few dollars.

The wood circle at the bottom of the rocker box is 19 inches in diameter, and the ring can be no more than 1" thick, as it would have to be on top of the bottom of the rocker box, ie it can't go in between the ground board and the rocker box.

Thanks for your help, computers are really not my thing, which is why I'm a Dob guy. Up til now, my club members have apps in their smartphones that provide me with the alt components of what I'm loking for, then I pan in azimuth til I find it.

Thanks. I printed it and now I take it to Kinko's so they can enlarge it and laminate it?

they print it on 24x36 glossy paper. they laminate it.

its already formatted for 24x36 paper. they don't have to enlarge it. they have to make sure they don't print to fit checked.

bring a ruler with you so you can measure it to make sure they print it correctly.

The reason I haven't used any one of several degree circle files that are available is due to the small size of the fonts which are difficult for me to see with my old eyes without having to squat down each time to get close to the setting circle. I like to be able to just glance down from my eye piece position to see the azimuth reading.
For this reason I've been drawing my own legible degree circles directly onto the ground boards.

Here's a pic of the current ground board for my new base I'm building, hand drawn setting circle in 5 degree increments. When I find a suitable degree circle with big bold numbers I'll print it and paste it on this ground board.

after reading gastrol's post about being able to see, what if it was white numbers and tic marks on a black background.

in the dark you want the numbers to lightup instead of the background?

like...

I think that with large fonts would be great!

Here's one - order up a 3-vane spider and get a nice quartz secondary while you're at it.

This spider shows six dimmer difraction spikes and allows me to see double stars much better. The new secondary holder and mirror also work better. The secondary is easier to collimate if necessary and holds collimation much better. You can get rid of those Bob's knobs.

Yes, it's a little expensive and so is the Zambuto mirror down at the other end of the tube. Now THAT should be your next upgrade.

Cheers,

Ron

For your application where you want to mount the degree circle on the upper rotating base board instead of the ground board, the setting circle has to read counter-clockwise.
