I am cleaning up a 10TE for someone. Trying to get some info about year of manufacture. Serial Number is 271855 with the script Tasco name and has the silver inner extension on the focuser. Any ideas on the AZ lock knob, it appears to be missing, but the brass insert is present. (Lots of similarity to my 6345!) Appears to have what I believe is the Royal Astro mark. Nothing under the nameplate. Objective appears to be in excellent condition, just cleaning things, checking on stiffness in motions and making sure everything is functional. I will get pictures when I get it fully setup. Has the box where nothing is attached to the lid. All items are in the bottom with the dewshield and the counterweight on the left, the focuser/finder in the rear center with the eyepieces/diagonal/porro prism/barlow and eyepieces under the barlow in the middle right of the center section and the CW shaft/slow mos in the front center. The mount head is on the right side. Brian

Hello Brian, Look forward to seeing the pictures of your friends 10TE. The 27XXXX serial numbers I believe cover scopes that were made from some time in early 1962 to late 1964.
I have two other 10TE scopes documented that have serial numbers starting with 2718XX. They are clones of each other in all aspects. So I hope this scope is a clone as well, if so it will help backup my dating assumptions.
Please include pictures of the wood box insides and the name tag(s) on the center of the upper lid.
If there is a manual or any paperwork and or inspection tags, that would be great to see as well.

Will do, have sheet that shows layout in the box that was glued to inside top of lid, have 2 inspection tags (1 possibly from the additional finder that was added) and the instruction manual. Brian

Hello Brian, the two previously mentioned 2718XX serial numbers are the only ones I've documented that have a REG NO 310600 tag below the Tasco name plate tag. I hoping your friend's scope has the same tags on the upper lid.
Beginning in the 1963 Tasco Full Size sales catalog, Tasco began requesting that for all correspondence, always refer to the registered number for service or parts.
These 2718XX serial numbers are the highest of all the 27XXXX serial number group. In the case of these 10TE and also 7TE models I have and or seen, they had the REG NO tag on the upper lid of the box also beginning with 3. And in 1965 when I assume Tasco started introducing what were the revised (7/10/15)TE-5 models, the wood boxes started using a REG NO with 5 on the lid. All these scopes have serial numbers beginning with 5 on the focuser name tag be it 7/10/15TE models.

Thanks Brian for confirming my educated guess. That tells me then the scope can narrowed down to the 1963 model up to late 1964 or whenever Tasco started using REG NO 510600 for the 1965 models.
The other two REG NO 310600 10TE scopes have the 7 hole accessory tray, bigger 1.38" Dia legs with the thicker leg brackets and the Polar Altitude scale with pointer.
Still look forward to seeing pictures of everything when you get the scope cleaned up.

Yep, legs are just like my 6345's, except the 6345 has a more evenly conical pointy tip, this one's go down to the tip in a sharper angle than the rest of the body. You hit the others on the nose too. I will get pictures tomorrow, I just got through mounting it. RA is real stiff to turn, so I think I am going to have to go clean the goo out of it and superlube it. Did relube the dec slow mo gear assembly, but the dec axis is stiff too. Dec slow mo gear shaft has been bent, can't get the threaded barrel off it but it does move up enough to unscrew the gear. Dec slow mo knob has been broken, but the owner works in marine equipment, so he will get some good epoxy and that should fix it up. (It sheared off well above the setscrew) I find it interesting how over time the mount changed from having the dec axis go above the RA assembly to where it now is even with it. I presume that disassembly of this type that is even is similar to the detailed one posted in another thread. Barlow appears to have something between the lenses or possibly cement separation. Brian

Knob issue. Left one is Dec knob, right one is AZ lock off my 6345, this mount was missing the AZ knob. It appears that the correct knob could be either one of these, some appear to have had the thumbscrew version and some had the lever version.

Box for Focuser/Finder/Eyepieces/Etc. I replaced the foam, the old stuff was disintegrating. Note the desiccant paks, there were a bunch of them. The cardboard pieces were original too. There also was a pack of original stuffing in the bottom of this section.
