I recently made/installed azimuth circles on my alt/az mounted newts. I use a digital level for altitude for full push-to capability. What a great setup.. it's nice to be able to get at least darn close to previously unseen objects. BUT of course, you are dependent on whatever technology is feeding you the changing alt/az coordinates. I'm currently using an older laptop PC & stellarium. The laptop is a little large, & less than convenient unless I setup a table (& chair for it). I've seen many recommendations for various software (Sky Safari & Stellarium among others) running on iphones & other phones. I have a phone of course, but not one suitable for this type of application. I'm wondering about one of this new inexpensive tablets that all seem to run android OS or google or what not. Anyone using a tablet instead of a phone? What it is it? What OS? What astronomy software do you run? I've got an intelliscope, but have also made setting circles for the mount and have the inclinometer like you for when/if the power goes dead. Like you, I'd rather do a tablet then a computer if possible. So far it's worked well, when I'm home I have stellarium on a pc, but the iPad still goes out front with me. I have 2 astronomy programs installed Stellarium and SkEye. The only issue is the magnetic sensor calibration. On my devices Stellarium works better than SkEye. SkEye is almost unless even after calibration. One of the other issues is the case your tablet is in if you use one. The Nexus and iPad devices use magnets to put the devices in sleep mode when you close the cover and wake it up when you open it. So, if you are going to use the unit for any type of magnetic navigation you need to remove it from the case and calibrate the sensors. Also if the app supports locking the screen orientation do it. It made such a difference with its bigger database and no need to fiddle around with a flash light. SkEye and Google Star Map both work well for me, letting me point at a constellation to see what is there. If the orientation is off, restarting the app works. For example, you can watch short period binary stars orbiting one another in whatever time step you desire. Adb is in the Android Software Developer's Kit. I wish tablet and phone reviewers would query the devices they review.
