NEB Rift Jupiter Sketch 11/25/12
      #5543970 - 11/28/12 02:18 PM Attachment (71 downloads)

This sketch is similar to the last one I made of this region but with better seeing. So I was able to pick up a little more detail in the NEB. The sketch got damp from the dew and smudged a bit but I was pleased how the NEB came out. You can see a barge preceding the rift on the NEBn. LRS+1 showed up well that night and had a pinkish cast similar to the GRS. It's cool there's a lot going on here on this side otherwise it would be rather bland. I'm grateful that I had some great views of Jupiter before the rain came.

Dean, here's an interesting write up on ALPO concerning the activity in the NEB.

http://alpo-j.asahikawa-med.ac.jp/kk12/j121127r.htm

Wow, so your showing it at CM II 280. That feels right, I believe it's part of the system, or jets, that blow toward the trailing limb. So, it should be advancing in longitude. I think that is consistent with earlier observations around CM 270.

And it stretches to the limb and maybe beyond. It's nearly the width of the NEB. Images show a complex of whirls and eddies, we see it as a unresolved glow. I like the spiky things sticking up (or down) - north - from the NTB. They are pretty cool when they show. And the barge it still around CM 260, it seems.

Great obs, Dean, glad you got some eyepiece time before the rains set in. And to see LRS+1 in color!

Norme,

Thank you very much. I really wanted to sketch this area again since there's a lot going on there.

That's an interesting link. Good reading. It will be fun to watch the NEB go through it's changes.

Clear and steady skies. Dean

Dean,

You only get better
That's tremendous detail!!!!

The complexity of the neb and ntb is stunning. This is a benchmark rendering!

Pete

Another lovely sketch, Dean! Wonderful detail.

You know, looking back at my journal, I noticed something like this rift beginning back in October here

I wonder if this rift system was just getting started then? Anyway, it seems to be getting more pronounced.

Thanks, as always, for posting!

-George

Dean,

Very fine sketch. That NEB rift is really something to see. Nice rendering of the turbulence of those belts. Good capture of LRS+1--I still haven't seen that one.

That's a beautiful sketch! Excellent detail in there! I like the brownish hue to it. I have been viewing Jupiter as of late at 235x. I'm going to try backing off on the mag a bit to see if I can grab more detail!

Kudos again to your drawing!!!

Cheers,

Dean, that was 5 nights ago. Tonight, in less than great seeing, best I could tell it was less prominent. More later...

Thank you very much everyone for the generous comments.

George,

I think you did catch this rift back in October. It looks like the same area on Jupiter. Excellent sketch by the way.

Michael,

There's a lot to see on Jupiter now. This revival of the NEB has been very interesting. Good luck on viewing LRS, I'm sure you will.

Markus,

Since I image my sketches before posting I can process the image in iPhoto. It's in this program that I added the brownish hue.

Norme,

According to what I've read the NEB rifting can be short lived. Thanks for the update. Maybe by Sunday the weather will clear. Meanwhile were getting some needed rain.

Good luck with your observations of Jupiter and thanks again. Dean

Eric,

Thank you. BTW thanks a great sketch of Jupiter in your avatar.

Norme,

I've some rifting in ok seeing conditions but it does look as though this area continues to change. Looking forward to some good seeing to make out the details better. During these sessions with marginal seeing I make timings of features on the meridian to keep track of these markings. From these timings I was able to make a map of Jupiter and plot the features.

Dean

Dean, just wanted to mention there is a nice rift at CMI 036, I think. Saw it last night near the meridian 10 Dec 1530 UT.

More later, dinner is ready.

Also, next time you get a view just preceding the GRS, check out the NNTB. Something new?

Hi Dean,

Thanks, the sketch of Jupiter that I used for my avatar was made during the 1987 opposition of Jupiter.

That opposition was different in that there was an unusual number of belts visible in the Southern Hemisphere while the Northern Hemisphere had an unusual number of dark spots.

Here are links to some of the sketches I made during that opposition:
