On November 17th I was at Everglades National Park. I was observing M33 for quite a while with my Dob, taking in more and more of the detail as it became evident. Even in dark skies this is one comparatively dim galaxy. I made rough field sketches and took plenty of notes, as I usually do, to make the final sketch in the comfort of home.

I thought sketching a galaxy would be easier than I experienced. Several sketches later and I'm still not satisfied. This is the best effort and sole survivor that I reluctantly included with my sketches. It's not quite accurate, but it does show the core and surrounding area as well as the spiral structure I observed.

Thanks for looking.

Ed D

Here's a 'negative' image of my sketch. It's not a bad representation of what I observed, but I'm not exactly thrilled with the end result. What I don't like is that it's a compromise of a little too bright core so the disk and spiral structure doesn't get obliterated.

Great work.
That is alot of detail for a 6" scope!
I also had a three night observing session with M33 this summer.I know your pain.It is a very hard galaxy to put to paper.it took several nights to capture what I did.I found it hard to get the geometry right.

This a beautiful sketch of M33. Your effort to make it real looks very nice. Congrats.

Ed,

Beautiful sketch of M 33. I remember examining it with a 6" f/8 scope back in the late 1970's from a dark site 20 miles south of Plover, Wisconsin. I could see it the way you sketched it. Nice work.

Ed, I'm not sure which I like better, the original which presents the study of details so nicely, or the negative which reminds me of views through my old 12" at a good dark site. Either way, a superb sketch!

Nice one, Ed. I can never see this much detail from our light polluted sky, and it's great to see this sketch.
