This is the "snapshot" I took in my head as I was driving down a New England back road last night. I was on my way to work, and after lamenting that I didn't have my camera I did my best to keep the image fresh in my memory. In my spare moments at work I sketched this scene with a No.2 pencil and printer paper. The original paper "as scanned" is below to show how I envisioned the finished product through Photoshop. I was unable to replicate the thin clouds that originally caught my eye...well, at least unable to create them so that the finished sketch didn't abandon the hand drawn representation. So I ditched the clouds and chose to replicate the higher contrast skies that I saw when I arrived at work. The obvious first impression is that the scale of the moon appears dramatically large. In my defense, I spend most of my photographic field time behind a 500mm camera lens, thus I've developed an eye for overly compressed images. Given the so called "compression" of the conjunction, the barn should have less wide angle effect. In some way, however, I thought the finished result actually worked. I'll spare you any more of my thought processes, as painful as they are. At any rate, I hope others had the opportunity to see this close approach. It was a stunning site.

Jason, you do have an artist's eye and talent. I missed it, clouded out. Thank you for showing it through your eyes. Had you not drawn the moon to scale, your work would have lost something. The harvest moon effect works. There are some images taken, but they are not set against the silhouette of a barn. Beautifully done.

Jason,
This is not a sketch; it is a work of art! If you were to re-render this to include the weather vane in the finished piece, this is something that I would frame and hang on my office wall.

Oh. Never mind. I see the weather vane now...up there on the roof
Would you mind if I copy this, have it enlarged, and frame it?

Thanks guys! It was nice to sit down and draw something, as I admittedly don't do it often anymore.
Stray, I'd be honored to be hanging on your wall.

Oh wow my friend, this is something I really like. What a great sketch and nice photographic representation. Just beautiful. Please do more with ground scenery like that, I love this kind of sketches. An artist eye you have.
Jason, more I look at your sketch and more I'm waiting from you. Please after the next new moon in the 7 first day, please try to capture the moon's crescent low on the horizon and best the first 3 days. I'm sure it will be very neat. Do the same shadowed scenery with the moon crescent and some stars.. Really I like your sketch.
Andre.

Could be a greeting card, really.
I am patiently waiting for Jason to sketch observe and sketch Jupiter more often...then Saturn later this year. Maybe even a crater or two. Heck, double stars and clusters, too.

There is a lot of expectation from you blokes.
Seriously, all of you...Norme, Gene, Tom, Stray, Andre, Ellicott...your words are extremely kind. I appreciate the camaradarie here.
Andre, you have some good ideas...and I notice you really are putting me to task, no? Okay, I'm game. If you like this style of sketching I can keep my eyes peeled for future opportunities.
BTW, Ellicott, nice photo.

Jason,
An excellent composition showing both the Moon and Jupiter together as they appeared earlier this week. The barn and leafless trees add much to this work. Wonderful!

Jason,
LOL! My wife came into my basement "office" earlier tonight while I was reviewing your sketch.
She thought that "I" was getting really good at "taking pictures" of the moon.
I had to explain to her that a) it was not my work, and b) that it was NOT a photograph.
She was quite impressed with your weather vane detail, BTW (she was a Montessori art teacher a few years back in 'Frisco...San Luis Obispo, actually).

-stray-
Ps--maybe you'd let me put this on a coffee mug? I'm serious.

It'll be for personal use only--to throw at critters on those frustrating nights, perhaps...to sip coffee while at the EP, definitely. Please?

Jason,
It took a while but I finally got a chance to see this drawing--very nicely done--you've got talent. And Luna always looks bigger when it's close to the horizon.
Thanks for posting the study, too. It is very good for the rest of us to see how something like this drawing is created.

Kris, Michael, thanks for the kind words.
Michael, I enjoy sharing the process with others. I don't know that it will inspire others, but it's the least I can do to give back for all the inspiration I get from others around here.
