It's hard to believe that people still fall for this.

I actually did fall for someone selling me a UO eyepiece from the UK. I sent him the money via Western Union, but a day or so later this person told me it was stuck in customs at the Ireland border, and that I should send money to get it out. Without sending money it was then supposedly shipped to Lagos, Nigeria, waiting for me to send more money to get it released to me. At this point I knew it was a scam.

Burned once. Never again.

This one isn't from Nigeria. The grammar is too good, and there are no spelling mistakes.

From what I have seen in my email I have won every lottery on the face of the Earth. Nigeria, Latvia, Sweden, all of them plus the unclaimed funds and that Prince who wants to give me millions for a small check cashing fee. I must be the wealthiest person alive. Too bad though, I don't have the funds to collect my riches.

I have received all sorts of scams similar to this over the years. The "Nigeria scams" are legendary and almost amusing. Still, people fall for them.

I have always thought about writing a book that collects the emails (and in the old days, onion-skin air mail letters) with sob stories describing inheritance monies held in escrow, frozen stock disbursements, unattended bank accounts and other incredible situations, and that only I can help the poor person out, and I will make a lot of money if...I send them a lot of money. Sadly, I never saved these documents.

At least before email these things were hand-written and mailed with international postage, which wasn't cheap, so there was some real effort and investment on the part of the perpetrator. Now, there's nothing to lose, and a single email can go to a million recipients.

Nowadays, it's impossible to know where these scams really originate, but in the old days most of the air mail letters really did come from Nigeria, bank deposits were to be made via check to Nigeria and there were even folks who traveled there as a condition of the scam (the NY Times did a piece on one of these individuals a few years ago). Maybe it's kind of a testament to some inherent creativity and perseverance among the citizens of that country. We all know there are crooks everywhere.

Yet, with the obvious scamminess of these efforts, a few people must respond, otherwise they would have ceased long ago. As PT Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute."

Actually, the Ukraine and Belo-Russia are the major sources of internet fraud these days. The Nigerians are too busy killing each other.

Not appropriate in Nigeria, either, have friends living through it there.

Cygnus, 2 aspects of that would have hit me as odd - agreed not necessarily something you may be aware of.

UO eyepieces are rare as rocking horse dung here, in the last 15 years of owning scopes and buying eyepieces I don't know of anyone selling them.

The next is Western Union is not something that is common here, I can honestly say that in all the years I have been here I have only seen one place advertising Western Union. That was a small dubious looking place in or out of a route around Bradford. I recall the sign as it was unusual to see.

Anybody that ask for money up front for just about anything its a scam. I have received over the years so many offers that want up front money to secure something its unreal. The internet is has this going on all the time. If it seems to good to be true its usually a scam. I never open any E-Mails that I do not know who sent it.
