This will be my first time at the TSP. Hope to see everyone there. I am looking forward to some truly dark skies and meeting new folks.

Wish I could be there again in 2013 but unfortunately I won't be able to attend. I remember one chap said in last year's TSP thread that he would not be going to the 2012 TSP because he was concerned about bad weather. It's too bad he didn't go, however, because every night was pretty awesome last year.
In my opinion, the skies there are even darker than the Rancho Hidalgo and Granite Gap sites in southwestern New Mexicon. Incredible! I loved watching Omega Centauri's huge ball of stars rise up above the horizon each and every evening.
If you can spring for it, I suggest you add in the meal package or at least purchase some of the meals individually. It really makes one feel like he/she is an integral part of the event if you can participate in some of the meals and it is a great chance to make some new friends.

I agree with the getting the meal plan. Also take lots of warm clothes, it can get pretty chilly at night. If you are taking a scope be sure to take a tarp to set it on, also you want a cover for during the day (I used the Desert Storm Cover). Anything that needs staking you want to take landscape spikes because the ground is hard as stone. I have not tent camped there yet but if I were I would probably set up on the middle field or the east side of the upper field. You might be able to get some shade from the trees/bushes that are there.

Erika, I don't know yet, if I go it would be this year since next year will be in June and it is just too hot and the nights too short. I am also wanting to make it out to Okie Tex since I haven't been to that one. I will know more later in the month, since attending is work dependent with vacation time.

I don't know yet either. I haven't been there since '07. I went to the ranch every year from 1991 to 2007. Finances. Here's a picture from the 1999 TSP. This is the upper field from the road going up to the water tower near the gate. Camera was a Mamiya RZ67 with a 110mm lens at F/3.6. Exposure time was 36 minutes on Kodak PPF 400 film on 5-15-1999 exposure start 12:00 midnight. The bright star trail in the middle is Deneb, The bright star trail to the right is Sadir. The red star trail on the left is Erakis, the Garnet Star.

Cool Joe! 1999 was my only time I was able to get to TSP. I'm actually in that picture! There's a poor 8" reflector nestled in there (somewhere...I think I'm off to the right near the back.)
TSP in June seems strange to me. I know that the TSP organizers pay very close attention to the climate data. I wonder if June for 2014 looks like it might be so much better as to offset the shorter nights.

They did June a couple of years or so ago, to allow for kids to go after school is out (for some folks at least!). That may be the reasoning for 2014 (I have no idea).
I'm looking forward to going, I went in 2006 and 2007 and had a wonderful time -- even with the sucky rainy weather we had in 2007.

Another thing to go to TSP is the McDonald Observatory tour. Yes, 2007 was a wet one. We were drenched from the downpour during our tour of McDonald going between buildings, but enjoyed the tour. Pictured is the 107" mirror with the bullet craters on it.

I won't be there in 2013, but I am hoping to go again in 2014. June isn't the best time of year, as Preston said nights are too short (but not as short as ours are here!) and it's very hot (that I don't mind!) but I'll see this time next year. I now go to TSP as much for the people - more so, in fact - than the observing. As I understand it, TSPs are following a pattern of April-May-June-April-May-June (and so on)?

Dean,
Yeah, I know... 2010 was my last one when I broke in the Teeter. I am jonesing.
Dave,
Yeah, but you're a star party junkie , and you make your drives more interesting by stopping on the way and picking up new AP mounts or some other new piece of astro drool.
Joe,
OK, OK I'm a lightweight when it comes to driving long days.
It's funny that when I went in 2010, I was disappointed in the transparency of the skies at the ranch because I had such pristine skies for 10 years from my backyard in Flagstaff. Now, after 2+ years in red-zone Indianapolis with no star party action since I got here, I think I'll go back to liking the skies at the ranch again.
I also have a new 120ED that needs to see some dark goodness...
Oh oh, I'm feeling the need to download a registration form...

I usually take two days going out and then drive nonstop coming back. I decided after 2011 I wasn't doing the nonstop thing again. I usually go from Birmingham to Abilene. In 2011 I took three days. The second day I took my time stopping at Odessa Meteor Crater and then overnighted in Alpine.. I recommend stopping for the crater. That third day I zipped down to Big Bend National Park. Really glad I took the time to do that.
