Now Im a refractor man usually but whilst at auction the other day I couldnt resist this little beauty - an Orion Optics UK 8" F6 Newt from late 80s early 90s I think. OO are checking the serial numbers for me to get the exact date.
The mirror needs re aluminising, images are a little milky, so taking it to OO next week they are only up the road from me.But what I saw of Jupitert the other night its a good performer. The mount is the Orion Optics basic EQ with a lovely great Beacon Hill wormwheel for the RA drive.
This has been a well treated and much loved scope and came complete with 2 volcano top circle T 1.25" eyepieces.
The RA drive ticks away happily and keeps the objects in view really well.
Cant wait to get the mirrors sorted and get viewing

Nice instrument!
But, being a southern US kind of fellow, I still can't get used to seeing the azimuth kicked up so high.
Enjoy it!

Cheers guys,
Its a basic no nonsense scope, very little luxury and almost agricultural engineering, but they work superbly.
It has a rolled steel tube, a curved vane secondary holder and a very basic R&P focuser which I know I will have to fight the urge to change because it has no feel and tons of slack.
Once the mirrors have been recoated I shall be giving it a go on Jupiter for imaging I reckon.
The previous owner loved it as can be seen by the fitted boxes he made for it, tube in one mount in the other.
Heres a couple more shots

Now that takes me back to my youth !!
Lovely scope. Mount looks solid and a smashing big worm n gear. Trying to guesstimate the diameter of the gear........ 6"?? What does the motor run off. AC or DC ?
Andy.

Hi Andy The RA wheel is 6.5" diameter and the motor is 240 ac
I just got the mirrors back from recoating at Orion and had a word with John and BArry about its age, they reckon the serial number is from September 1996.
