Hi folks,
Jupiter reaches opposition this weekend and it won't get any better than this. I would love to see what folks with smaller aperture scopes can do while we have this great opportunity. Here is The King on Friday morning, taken with my SW100ED (4") at f/36. Seeing conditions were only average/fair, but the small refractor still gave a good account of itself. Interested in giving it a go? Good luck!

Great job with the small bore Brian! I've got a question about imaging Jupiter with a refractor; I was trying to use a 3x barlow on my 92mm TMB-92L refractor but I couldn't get enough back focus to accomplish that. Do you increase the effective focal length of your refractor with a barlow or with eyepiece projection? How high can you increase the effective focal length of your system?

Thanks Alan, Pete, and Richard! Pete - With the SW100ED I use a Barlow to boost the focal length from f/9 to f/27 through f/45...this shot used a Siebert 4x Barlow for f/36. In order to reach focus with your refractor you may need a tube extension - I do. I prefer the ones from Stellarvue. Richard - This image was taken with an Imaging Source DBK21AU618 (a one shot color camera) and a Baader UV/IR cut filter.

I'm still very, very new at imaging. Really green. But, this is one I took on Thanksgiving with a Questar 3.5, no barlow, and re-sized.

Here's my contribution. I used a 130 mm F/11.5 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and a 3x barlow to capture this image on the 14th of November. The camera is a DBK21 and I used about 1700 frames. Stacking was done with Autostakkert!2, wavelets with Registax 6 and further processing with Photoshop CS2. Conditions were fair to good that night. Cheers, Rik

Thanks Brian. How do you calculate the required extension tube length for your barlow/refractor combination? Is there a formula for doing that?

Hi Pete,
I am mortally certain there is a formula but I have no idea what it is and did not use it myself. The operational way to tell is to plug in your planet cam and keep racking the focuser in and out until you score focus or see an out-of-focus blob at maximum in or out travel. If you get the blob (most likely at maximum extension) you need a tube extender. You can get them from Orion, TV, AP, Stellarvue and elsewhere; I like the ET3 model from SV: http://www.stellarvue.com/adapters.html, you are looking for something that gives you about 2" extra travel. You will need a 1.25" adapter to receive your nosepiece, I find this centering adapter from Orion does a great job keeping everything tight and properly aligned: http://www.optcorp.com/product.aspx?pid=15747&kw=centering%20adapter&... Hope this helps!

Your APO qualifies, Darryl. I'd like to see what the new cam does on some other scopes, too.
I've ordered DMK21AU618 before I saw your stunning pics with the new cam. I just couldn't make the old DMK31 work on the C14. I want to try a color CMOS later and see if I can get away from mono everything. Thanks.

A couple of pics from earlier this week, both taken with my IS DBK618 cam. Captured with IC Capture, cropped/centered in Castrator, stacked in AS!2 and wavelets in R6; no further processing done.
C6SGT at f/30 (4500mm):

AT72ED at f/36 (2580mm):

The scopes share a dual saddle on my CG5 mount so getting shots thru both was fairly quick and painless.

This thread inspired me to use a Takahashi TS-40 afocally with a 7mm ep. I got about a hundred frames stacked in AviStack2 and no additional processing. Nearly broke my neck trying to point the thing almost straight up while lying on the grass. I think one can see a hint of something.

This thread and Mert's photo had me going back through the captures I did with my 6" newt and webcam. I knew I had some pretty decent images, but couldnt remember if they could compare with anything I get with my 8" now. Went back through my Flickr account and I did have some really good images with my 6", and although it isn't from this year, I have to say it is some of my best.
This is from August of 2010 with my C6-N + SPC900NC:
 Jupiter 8/7/10 8:20UT by zAmb0ni, on Flickr
Also, here is a link to an animation from the same night.
I'm pretty sure that I did the stacking in registax, going to see if I still have the videos on my hard drive and try stacking them in AS2! to see if there is any improvement.

Thx! I went back and I still did have the .avi from that capture and tried restacking it and didn't get anything better. Guess my processing hasn't really changed much in 2 yrs! .
Funny thing about the video is that I have no clue just how I nailed focus. There really wasn't a feature big enough to really focus on. At least with my 8" I can find *something* to use as a reference to try and get focus. I think that is one of the problems with getting a really good image from a small bore scope on planets, it is tough to get the right focus because the target is usually too small. I did have the advantage of a dual speed crayford on my reflector.
I should have a dual crayford her by Friday at least for my 8". I really hope that it will help on that scope. Not sure when my new camera will arrive though.

Thanks Glenn! I really like Harry Siebert's gear, it's well made and has some of the nicest glass I have ever seen. Not everyone cares for the minimalist feel of his Barlows and eyepieces; his stuff is very light in weight compared to other equipment, but I like it. My imaging case currently has the 1.75x, 4x, and Multi-1.5x to 3.5x Barlows from Siebert, and they get a lot of use...

All published so far are great images, hat off for all of you!
Here is my attempt as promised, eventhough my laptop crashed and I lost nearly 27 avi's. Here is 1 I could save from that drive, stacked with AS!2 wavelets with Registax, nothing more. Taken with my 6" MAk, TV x2 barlow and the DFK21 @15fps at aprox. 4200mm FL. Too bad all my avi's are gone, now restoring my laptop. BTW, due to filelimit size this is a jpg version, the other version 390kB is much nicer.

Nice images, Gentlemen.
I took 5 images from the earlier session and made an animation. Not only is Ganymede making a transit, Europa is at its max elongation and making a direction change from our perspective. Callisto is emerging from Jupiter's shadow.
Widefield Animation of Jupiter and Moons
You can visit Astrobin for the GIF. Thanks.
Paul
BTW: does anyone think the faint object moving between Io and Europa is anything other than an artifact? Starry Night did not show a smaller moon in that position. And it seems to follow an orbital path...not of a Jovian moon though...more like a comet. But, I don't think it is a comet. Weird?

Hi Paul, nice, and I looked at the GIF, I was at first thrilled at the angle it was coming in, but then I thought that perhaps it's a hot pixel (my cameras have a number of those), the orbital path being the periodic error of your mount?

I was thinking along those same lines, Jason. I have had some hot pixels showing up, especially at higher gain settings. The artifact is noticeable in red channel.

Thanks zA, Paul & Paul, and Jason I promised myself that after opposition and before Jupiter started shrinking that I would do some imaging with the 5.5", it's a lot of fun! And here is a link to an animation I made using 20 images from the 13th, sorry it gets twitchy in the middle but I had a 16 minute break that broke my stride...

My "Jupiter campaign" was just too demanding with only one scope unfortunately Brian.....and I'm still processing stuff from them 5 days after we got back - hope to post a compilation of all the good images/animations in a few days but for sure I'll do some 5" imaging on Saturn, the season of which starts very soon down here..!

Hi Paul, I used to crop the hot pixel trails out when possible so that I didn't have to push the black down too much or copy paste unnatural blocks of space that can be seen because their noise/gradients don't match, but I really like a bigger outer space as a backdrop, so I finally recently started using the clone tool with a small draw tip sampling the very nearby background space, which will pretty much match any background gradient, for very natural erasing of hot pixel trails no matter how long they are. If you or anyone have any questions about that, you can PM me.

This is only my second attempt with this camera, and fourth overall, so I'm at the very beginning of planetary photography.
I used: 150/750 Newtonian scope, 2x No Name Barlow, DMK21.AU04.AS camera, Registax6 for processing.
Aditional data: Night of 12.17.2012, GRS visible, Visible Moons Io and Europa

Hi! -Long time, no see....
This one was truly a picture to die for... -almost!!
I have been trying to grab some good images this autumn and winter.. -but with no greater luck, due to the extremely bad weather we have been experiencing here. I have gotten some "kind of -ok" shots with both the C8 and C9,25, but nothing with the quality that I expected to get, when Jupiter was at about 55 degrees elevation. Well, I shot this image of Jupiter and Io, tonight from my balcony. As we have milder weather coming in now, the snow on my roof has been melting for a couple of days. As I was mounting the scope on the mount, a small (but obviously heavy) avalanche of snow and ice fell down on the balcony... It hit my balcony table, were I have my laptop placed when imaging.... -leaving the table completely crushed! I dont want to think about, what would have happened if that chunk of ice had hit me in the head!! I decided to go on with my imaging mission anyway, and I managed to grab one .avi before the clouds came rolling in.
I used my Vixen ED 100 SF and the DBK.21.618 with a 2,5X PM. 2500 frames of 5000. Y800/Y800 codec. The image is resized to 170% in R6.
The picture itself is nothing to write home about, only half decent seeing, windy (15 m/sec) and clouds coming and going...
I´ll post it anyway, as it could have been my last! Next time, when imaging on my balcony, I will wear a helmet for sure!! I will go through the images that I have shot with the C8 and C9,25 this autumn/winter and post the better of them later on!
Kind regards, Roger!

Nice to see you posing again Roger, been a while! Sounds like you need a helmet yes! Very nice image with the 100ED. I've pretty much had the same weather as you However I got lucky one day with my C8 (Yes, I got my old C8 back), and ended up with my best Jupiter session ever (Thread).

Here's one more; just my second Jupiter image since early days (6" dob & ETX-80) back in 2008. Actual frame rate was really slow and until I buy something more appropriate I may need to dust off my old SPC900NC webcam. Perhaps if I play around with the SSAG I can coax some more FPS out of it. This was set to capture 640x480; full frame was even slower, but still faster than 1 frame every 4 seconds, which is the best I can do on my SXV-H9 (not an SXVF - F for fast).

It seems fitting that I closed out the imaging year with some small bore action. Jupiter put on quite a show the night of 30/31 December with an eclipse/emergence and transit events. This composite shows a bit of these two events, the pair was acquired through my TEC 140 and a Siebert 4x Barlow at f/28. I was using the DBK21AU618 with a Baader UV/IR cut filter at 60 fps for 180 seconds...

Not really, probably just less saturation boost in post processing. This data did not seem as good, even though there is more there...but...I'm probably not a good judge at this point. The deconvolution was more difficult to get...I won't say right as I'm still not totally happy with it. It'll take some time to get into a rhythm.
Thanks,
Steve

Lot of very good images you al have posted here,
made me want to post another shot from 123012.
Taken with my 6" SW Mak.
I'd like to ask if the image is dark on your screens, since
on my laptop it's rather ok, maybe I have to adjust/
calibrate my screen?

@ Brian (BKBrown))Well done Ciarlotto! I really like the presentation; so what do you think of the SW Mak?
Hi, Brian, thank you. I think Mak SW 127 is an amazing scope both for Planetary observations and imaging: jupiter's images were taken in no good seeing conditions but I presume that in better seeing conditions, Mak 127 is able to give stunning images. I appreciate a lot its collimation sistem and its ability to mantein collimation; the construction of the OTA is sturdy: you can feel it on the hands! great the contrast of images. I recently got an ASI1200MM: I'm waiting for a better weather to test it, and I presume that the couple Mak127-ASI120 will give good performance... The little Mak is a very good telescope: I always suggest it for beginners who are interested to Solar Sistem observations and planetary imaging.

Hi,
here's my contribution - only my second picture ever of Jupiter. Its monochrome unfortunately as the camera I used was the DMK51. Although this camera is normally considered unsuitable for planets, I thought I'd give it a go and was pleasantly surprised by the result
Taken on 3rd Jan. through Vixen 102M at f20 and processed with AviStack and PS6.
cheers,
Paul.

This was done 12/13/12. Just missed the transit. Anyway, shot was done in 2 parts. One for Jupiter, one for the Moons. Not real happy with the moons. Probably should have done it in 3 shots. Ganymeade, Io, and Europa got blown out a bit trying to get enough light to show Callisto.
Done with an iOptron 114 (4.5")Newt and MS Lifecam Studio. About as "small bore" as it gets.

Welcome Paul and Driven1, thanks for the additions to the thread. Paul - that mono image actually looks pretty cool, I sometimes shoot mono with my 4" intentionally because cloud details tend to stand out better. Thanks!
