Because of the close alignment between Io’s shadow and Io itself trailing behind it, I was able to watch both cross the disk of Jupiter superimposed on the SEB. Occasionally, as the view would briefly improve, I saw the fine festoons projecting toward the equatorial zone from the NEB.

Nice catch, Frank. All the features are there: darker SEB core, lighter NEB features, and especially the albedo in southern temperate and polar regions. I'd bet you had a great view despite the seeing.
Next time you capture Io transit, try this. You might be surprised.

Frank, I like the subtle quality of the festoons. The transit must have really been great, Io really stands out. Very nice

Nice catch, Frank! I was wondering where Io was this evening while peering through my dinky 60mm.

You observed Jupiter about dthe same time as me, just 30 minutes later. That was nice to see io's shadow so close.
Very nice ketch. Outside temperature for me was -8 C.

Wow that's nice Frank. Amazing how 3D Io looks with the shadow do close. I like the whole sketch Frank. Nice shadings and gradients. Smooth.

Norme, Jim, -stray-, Mel, Pete and Andre
Thank you all for your remarks and comments.
----
Norme that is most interesting thread, I'll make note of that for next time.
----
Andre, You had the colder weather.
---
I usually can't follow the moons across Jupiter with my 10" or smaller scopes but if the seeing is at least average I can see the moons when they are close to their shadows in 12" or larger scopes.
I was having fun observing last night. It is so unusual this late in the year.

Frank, it was a most interesting challenge. Please do. I'd really like to hear the results from others, including yourself of course. I almost think it can be done, in fact I am convinced it can be. Difficult by all means, but doable.

Norme,
When I have witnessed the transits of Jupiter's moons across Jupiter's disk, it always appears to me that the moon in question appears smaller than its shadow (when I can see the moon). I would assume that is because the limb of the moon blends into the planets bright cloud tops. Also the view of the moon dances in average seeing so it's difficult to tell if is is non-round. Frank

Frank, absolutely. The moon does bounce too much is average seeing. Even in near perfect seeing there is a tiny bit of distortion. But, it does indeed appear just a hair out of round. One would never notice it with Io alone, but if Europa is in the same FOV, give it a look. I believe you can see it's not quite circular. It's not that it's obviously elliptical, but it just does not have that clearly circular disc Europa has. That's how close, that's how tough the observation is. But, it can be done.

Frank,
That's a great sketch and observation. Good catch on Io--it's usually so hard to see but easier when in front of a dark belt. Very dramatic when so close to its shadow. Thanks for sharing this one with us.

Frank, great job with the 3D effect that such a tight transit has to offer. I think you did well to capture quite a few distinct features for such mediocre seeing, including the darker spots in the NTB. Nice work.
